Here’s what happened during Project Blue Book season 1 episode 10’s “The Washington Merry-Go Round.” The History Channel has produced some great original series in recent years, with their first scripted show being Vikings. The initial seasons focused on the adventures of real-life Viking Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel), and the show quickly attracted a loyal audience for its great characters and bloody battle sequences. History are also behind original dramas Six and Knightfall.
Project Blue Book is another series based on real-life events, which looked at the American government investigating UFO sightings. The show stars Aidan Gillen (Game Of Thrones) as Dr. Hynek and Michael Malarkey as Air Force Captain Michael Quinn, who are partnered to investigate UFO cases. The real Allen Hynek was entirely unconvinced about UFO phenomena, which is one reason he was brought on to Project Blue Book but is said to have been converted based on his experiences. He later invented the “Close Encounter” scale and acted as a consultant on Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters Of The Third Kind; he also had a brief cameo in the sci-fi classic.
Hyrek and Quinn saw some pretty strange things throughout the series and by Project Blue Book season 1 episode 10 they’re both fully ready to believe in extraterrestrial intelligence. The finale is titled “The Washington Merry-Go Round” and is based on true-life events from 1952, where several UFO sightings were reported around Washington DC. Project Blue Book the show is something of a mash-up between history and The X-Files, so it takes a lot of dramatic license with events.
Project Blue Book season 1 episode 10 sees Quinn himself taking to the skies to get a look at these mysterious flying objects up close. He comes away convinced they’re not Russian aircraft and says as much when testifying before Congress. He feels betrayed when Hynek openly calls his perception into doubt and provides a more logical explanation. When Quinn confronts him about this after the hearing, he reveals it was all a ruse. He feels they need to convince everybody else they don’t believe, even though they do. This will make them seem trustworthy to the people in charge, allowing them to continue their investigations.
Another major event from the Project Blue Book finale includes the murder of the Secretary of Defense Fairchild (Robert John Burke, RoboCop 3) after he tries to take an 8mm film showing potential proof of UFOs to the President. The final scene also finds the mysterious Fixer in the Antarctic. He looks upon a huge alien artifact – which resembles the Washington Monument – that starts to light up. “The Washington Merry-Go Round” ended Project Blue Book on a very intriguing note and it will be interesting to see what happens in season 2.
