RDJ’s Tony Stark Returns As War Machine’s AI In Armor Wars Fan Art

Armor Wars fan-art imagines Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark becoming War Machine’s AI. Marvel Studios officially announced the aforementioned Disney+ project during Disney’s Investor Day 2020 alongside a string of other new big and small screen projects. It will feature the return of James “Rhodey” Rhodes as he deals with new issues with regard to the Iron Man tech and all its subsequent variations.

Based on the Marvel Comics’ storyline of the same title, its narrative mainly focuses on Tony trying to fend off villains who attempt to steal his creation. This story may sound a bit similar to what happened in Iron Man 2 as the genius, billionaire Avenger fought off the government trying to confiscate the Iron Man technology, while that’s intertwined with Tony’s personal dilemmas, Armor Wars will more likely focus on the existence of the suits. Other than that, not much is known regarding plot specifics for the show, but one fan floats the idea that it could very well be the project that would bring back Iron Man into the MCU.

The idea is that Iron Man would provide guidance as Rhodey navigates the tricky situation of people trying to steal arguably his best friend’s best invention. Check it out below:

What’s interesting here is that even if Marvel Studios doesn’t go this storytelling route, there’s still a way to incorporate Downey and Stark into Armor Wars through flashbacks. The Iron Man tech falling into the wrong people’s hands had always been something that he’s been keeping an eye on after the epiphany he had when he was abducted in Afghanistan and he realized that his weapons are being used against the people he wanted to protect. It’s possible that he may have put a protocol in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future as a precautionary measure. Considering how much he was obsessed with the future, it sounds exactly like him to think forwardly and make sure that it won’t be easy to get his Iron Man blueprint just because he’s no longer around.

Armor Wars isn’t the only future MCU project that could bring Downey back to the MCU. In fact, the idea of Stark being an AI was directly lifted from an Ironheart comic book which Marvel Studios is also bringing to the small screen with Dominique Thorpe playing Riri Williams. Just because there are ways to rope the actor back into the franchise doesn’t mean that Marvel Studios should do it. Exciting as it may sound to see Iron Man back in the MCU after his death in Avengers: Endgame, doing so could cheapen an otherwise fitting send-off to the beloved character.
