Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Find Red Sage

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most detailed video games in history, setting a new bar for realism in the medium. In between the towns and cities are vast and diverse ecosystems with flora and fauna to both admire and collect. Hunting provides an elaborate mini-game in and of itself, but there are more peaceful ways of interacting with the land with over 40 different plant species that can be gathered.

Plants and herbs are found everywhere and can be used in crafting or as consumables when the player (or their horse) is in a pinch. They aren’t all so easy to find, though. One of the hardest to get is Red Sage, which has been a requirement for Red Dead Online Daily Challenges in the past. This guide will explain where to find Red Sage and how to spot it among all those other beautiful western colors.

Where to find Red Sage in Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Sage can be found exclusively in New Austin, the westernmost state in the game. In the story mode, this area can only be accessed in the epilogue, but it is available from the very beginning of Red Dead Online. While the herb can be found throughout the state, the most reliable spot is right around Fort Mercer, as seen on the map above.  Fort Mercer is located in the Rio Bravo area. Head to this area and scavenge just north of the road that is north of Fort Mercer. The herb can be found rather abundantly in this area, and the player can always leave and rejoin a session to get it to spawn again.

How to Spot Red Sage in Red Dead Redemption 2

Finding Red Sage isn’t difficult because it isn’t around, but more so because it blends in easily with the surrounding landscape. It doesn’t look too different from grass or other shrubberies, although its red flowers do help to distinguish it. To more easily spot this elusive herb, activate Eagle Eye vision by pushing down on both thumb-sticks simultaneously. This will cast most of the surroundings in a darkened tint, except for any plants or animals that can be interacted with.  Activate Eagle Eye and any nearby Red Sage will be highlighted with a glittering effect that extends a few feet higher than the plant would otherwise reach, making it much easier to spot.

Consuming Red Sage will count as picking it for any Daily Challenge, so if satchel space is limited, don’t worry about putting it directly into the character’s mouth (or their horse’s).
