Red Dead Redemption 2: Where to Find The Carolina Parakeet

Hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 is as detailed and meticulous as one might expect from a game where the main character can shave and bathe and his horse’s testicles will shrink in the cold. There are hundreds of different animal species spread throughout the game-world and each requires different strategies to track and hunt. Some are easy to find (and some can turn the tables and do the hunting themselves), while others may take a fair bit of chance to come across.

Of all the critters big and small, the hardest and rarest of them all is undoubtedly the Carolina Parakeet. This real-life bird sadly went extinct in the early twentieth century. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in 1899 and has garnered a well-earned reputation for historical verisimilitude. It’s not hard to see where this is going… This guide will explain how to play a role in the Carolina Parakeet’s demise and hunt this hard to find bird.

Finding The Carolina Parakeet In Red Dead Redemption 2

The Carolina Parakeet is only found in the state of Lemoyne, which is in the south-easternmost corner of the map. More specifically, this tricky bird spawns in the Bayou Nwa area, directly north of Saint Denis and east of the Kamassa River. While there is an element of chance to come across the Carolina Parakeet throughout this region, there is a high likelihood they will appear in the spot on the map seen above, especially if this is the player’s first time coming across the bird. If the Carolina Parakeet isn’t appearing, the player should try resting or fast traveling away and then back to the Bayou Nwa in order to get the birds to spawn.

Carolina Parakeet’s have yellow heads and blue-green bodies that blend in excellently with the grass they tend to hang around in. If you spot this grass, which is often near a body of water, keep an eye out for the birds. Use Eagle Vision by pressing down both thumbsticks simultaneously in order to see them more easily. Herbivore Bait can be used to try and attract them, but be aware, Arthur is essentially Carnivore Bait himself for the many alligators around. Try not to get eaten as you trek around these swamps.

The easiest way to stumble across the Carolina Parakeet and get a few kills is to ride a horse through their flock. This will trample a few and put the player in a position to take out a couple more with a weapon of choice. If going for a clean kill, Small Game Arrows must be used.

Why Kill The Carolina Parakeet in Red Dead Redemption 2

After catching a Carolina Parakeet, a new mission will be added to Arthur’s Mission Log tasking him to hunt more of this fleeting bird. If the player wishes to complete the quest, they will have to hunt down and kill 25 Carolina Parakeets in total.

There are no achievements or trophies tied to completing this mission, and the most Arthur can get for selling a Carolina Parakeet carcass is $4.38. Upon completion, there will sadly be no more Carolina Parakeet left. Nevertheless, it’s one of the many interesting and hard to find things to do in this gigantic game.
