Resident Evil 2 & 3 Finally Playable In VR Thanks To Mod

The latest remakes of Resident Evil 2 & 3 are now more terrifying thanks to a new VR compatibility mod. Both games were released on the original PlayStation in the late 90s, which terrified audiences without the hardware power seen today in gaming consoles. Graphics have come a long since the original PlayStation, which presented an excellent opportunity for Capcom to update some of their most beloved games in the Resident Evil franchise.

After releasing a string of games that were not as well-received as Capcom hoped, the company decided to refresh the franchise with their release of Resident Evil 7. Not only did the game reignite the world’s love for the series, but Resident Evil 7 also became Capcom’s 2nd best-selling game of all time thanks to the series shifting back to its horror roots. However, after RE7‘s success, no one expected the developers to release one of the greatest remakes of all time: Resident Evil 2. Remade with stunning graphics and a brilliant balance of tense gameplay and scares provided fans with a lot to chew on until the Resident Evil 3 remake was released the following year. With modernized graphics and sound design, the only way these games could be more terrifying is if there were fully VR compatible, and one modder has decided to make that nightmare come true.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As reported by Kotaku, the remakes of both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are now playable in VR with full motion controls. While the mods are in an early state, modder praydog has managed to add full motion controls, head-based movement and smoothed out many other processes to make playing the Resident Evil remakes in VR a smooth experience. Many mods have added hilarious enemies like Shrek to Resident Evil 3, but this mod looks to help players experience these intense games like never before. Specific directions on playing and installing the mods are available at Github for those gamers who are brave enough to try.

Watching the mod in action truly demonstrates praydog’s modding talents as players dodge zombies and use the VR’s motion controls to dispatch deadly attackers with more precision than before. Developers created the RE remakes to be experienced from the 3rd person perspective but playing them with this well-made VR mod may prove to be a more adrenaline-pumping immersive experience.

Many people have commented on how quickly video games have advanced throughout the years, but not many examples prove the point as effectively as comparing the original PlayStation’s Resident Evil 2 with this VR mod for the Resident Evil 2 remake. With VR gaming creating a new level of immersion for the future of entertainment, game developers will hopefully use this new technology to push the limits of storytelling. Capcom has proven they can use the technology effectively with the recent release of Resident Evil 4 VR. Resident Evil 7 was released compatible with the PlayStation VR, but there has been no official support for the feature on any other VR headset or PC. Talented modders like praydog may continue to be a primary source for great VR experiences like the Resident Evil 2 & 3 mod until more game developers jump onto the Virtual Reality train.

Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remakes are available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
