The Resident Evil 3 remake makes a number of changes and additions to the original game, including a brand new post-credits scene. The Resident Evil 3 post-credits cutscene appears to tease the next step for the series’ story, but fans are divided about who shows up in the ending and what game it could be teasing.
The Resident Evil 3 remake followed in the third-person footsteps of 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake, reimagining the fixed-camera PlayStation title for modern consoles. Most Resident Evil 2 reviews saw the first of these remakes as a positive take on the original game, but Resident Evil 3 has proven more divisive. While critics’ Resident Evil 3 reviews generally favored the remake, fans were less satisfied.
Resident Evil 3′s Metacritic user score sits at 6.3 at the time of writing. The Resident Evil fanbase seems to feel the many changes made in RE3′s remake missed what made the original game so beloved. But Capcom doesn’t seem interested in creating direct, one-to-one translations of its classic games onto modern hardware. Instead, these remakes seem to follow an alternate continuity – one that could soon see more games, judging by the Resident Evil 3 post-credits scene.
What Resident Evil 3’s Post-Credits Scene Could Mean For The Series
At the end of the Resident Evil 3 remake, Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service member Nikolai Zinoviev reveals he was hired by an unnamed “client” – possibly scientist Albert Wesker, or the same mysterious corporation who employed RE2′s Ada Wong – to gather combat data on Umbrella’s bioweapons and destroy the Raccoon City Umbrella facility. His employer apparently also didn’t want the vaccine for the zombie virus being circulated, since Nikolai shoots the vial Jill Valentine had created earlier. He is then left behind in Raccoon City, presumably killed in the bombing, and Jill vows to take down Umbrella. In the post-credits scene, a figure picks up the broken vial from a desk in a room with a punching bag, then walks off camera.
The figure appears to be a woman, but fans disagree about her possible identity. Her green shirt suggests she could be Resident Evil Zero’s Rebecca Chambers, who wears green in that game (while Jill is associated with blue, and RE2′s Claire Redfield is associated with red), but it’s also possible it’s simply Jill wearing a different shirt to show time has passed. Regardless of who the figure is, fans on Reddit speculate the scene is meant to show that the person is, at some point later in the RE timeline, picking up the investigation into who Nikolai’s employer is. Alternatively, if the figure is Jill, the vial could simply be a memento kept to remind herself of her mission to take down Umbrella. Since the figure’s identity is unknown, it’s impossible to say what the scene means for the series’ future, but there are a few possibilities.
According to recent Resident Evil 8 rumors, the next RE game was originally meant to be Resident Evil: Revelations 3, but it was turned into a full-on Resident Evil 8 after being well-received by testers. Further rumors suggest Resident Evil 8 will star Chris Redfield and Resident Evil7 protagonist Ethan Winters, but that doesn’t mean Jill or Rebecca couldn’t show up at some point, too, just as Chris did in RE7. Another remake before or after RE8 is still possible, however, as Capcom recently asked Resident Evil fans if they would play another, even if it required buying a next-gen console. If the figure is Rebecca, the post-credits scene could be teasing her further involvement in the ongoing story, tied in with a possible Resident Evil Zero remake. The final possibility is that Capcom could be teasing a direct continuation of Resident Evil 3′s story in a brand new game. Because of the other rumors, this probably wouldn’t happen for quite some time, but perhaps Capcom could release Resident Evil 3 DLC instead.
