Riverdale Creator Confirms Josie & The Pussycats Are Returning To Show

It’s official, Josie and the Pussycats are making their way back to RiverdaleThe CW series based on Archie Comics is halfway through season 5 and is currently on a mid-season hiatus. It is expected to resume airing by August and will wrap up in October. The teen mystery drama follows the story of the comics’ beloved characters and features a talented cast including KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones.

Josie and the Pussycats, Riverdale High’s resident girl band is made up of Josie McCoy, Valerie Brown, and Melody Valentine. While it has a different storyline from Archie and friends, the group is an essential part of Archie Comics much like Sabrina the teenage witch. In the CW series, Josie and the Pussycats were played by Ashleigh Murray, Hayley Law, and Asha Bromfield. The cat ears-wearing trio has not been seen in Riverdale since season 2 and their return has often been talked about by fans.

When Riverdale season 5 returns on television, fans can expect to see a Josie and the Pussycats homecoming. Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the exciting news via Instagram on Thursday, posting a picture of the script’s cover page. “It’s official. #thePussycats are coming back to #Riverdale,” the showrunner wrote in the caption.

As the script cover revealed, the girls will be back for Season 5, Episode 15, which will be titled “Chapter Ninety-One: The Return of the Pussycats.” While CW did not announce whether Josie and the Pussycats will be played by the same actresses, Law and Bromfield jumped on the news to tease their return. Law, who played Valerie Brown in the first two seasons, re-posted the script cover on her IG account. Bromfield, who portrayed Melody Valentine, tweeted the same script and a group photo of her castmates as Josie and the Pussycats.

The last time Riverdale fans saw Josie and the Pussycats all together was way back in season 2, when the girl group broke up after Valerie and Melody confronted Josie for wanting to have a solo career. Murray kept her role as Josie and appeared in a few more episodes until she left Riverdale High to supposedly tour the country with her father. Murray later reprised her role as Josie in Riverdale’s spinoff, Katy Keene, which was canceled after one season.

It will be interesting how Josie and the Pussycats’ homecoming will play out as Riverdale saw a big, seven-year time jump at the beginning of season 5. So far, it is not known if the girl band’s return will be in the form of a flashback or a permanent comeback. If the trio is sticking around, it certainly raises the question as to why they decided to return to the dark and murderous town seven years later. Viewers will have to wait until August for more clues when Riverdale returns to CW.
