Riverdale Season 5 Betty & Jughead Storyline Teased By Creator

Riverdale creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, teased what’s to come for Betty and Jughead in season 5. The CW’s hit series, which puts a darker lens on the iconic characters of Archie Comics, positioned Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) as love interests in season 1. Affectionately deemed “Bughead” by the fandom, the pair have been through many ups and downs on the show. Most recently, Rivderale underwent a seven-year time jump that saw the dynamic duo, as well as fellow star-crossed lovers Archie (KJ Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes), grow estranged over the years.

Since the flash forward, Betty and Jughead haven’t really had a major storyline together. It was a purposeful decision on the writers part to ensure that Riverdale was revitalized post-jump. While core four Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead reunited to save their dwindling town, their respective relationships weren’t exactly mended. Archie and Veronica were the first OG couple to rekindle their flame, but even that hasn’t been set in stone. After a lengthy mid-season hiatus earlier this year, Riverdale finally returned on Wednesday, August 11, and viewers saw a glimmer of hope for Bughead.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The new episode proved Betty still cares about Jughead as she teamed up with Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook) to find him. After the episode aired, Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke to ET about what’s in store for the once-lovebirds, teasing healing for them. Read what the creative told the publication below:

“I will say we love that Betty is worried about Jughead, we love that she’s teaming up with Tabitha to try and find him. And there’s one scene, I think it’s maybe episode 516 that is almost like a standalone mini opera. It’s just Betty and Jughead alone and it’s so good to see Lili and Cole in scenes together and their chemistry is sort of undeniable. So we are going to see more of Betty and Jughead and even if it doesn’t mean that they are immediately getting back together, they were an important part of each other’s life and it’s good that we’re getting back to that.”

The show returned with episode 11, which means fans may have to wait a bit to see Betty and Jughead’s chemistry light up the screen once again. As it stands now, Jughead is on his way back to New York City to confront his inner demons after a pretty wild psychedelic trip that ended in a stay at a homeless camp. Meanwhile, Betty joined forces with Tabitha, who’s locked into her own drama with the beanie-wearing writer, to find Jughead. Once they reached a conclusion, the new team seemed to shift their efforts to the search for Betty’s missing sister.

Aguirre-Sacasa’s teases aren’t terribly shocking, but if fans read between the lines, it’s pretty clear he thinks of Betty and Jughead as endgame. The Riverdale writer’s willingness to be so transparent about that fact is refreshing. Of course, Bughead has work to do first. Unlike Archie and Veronica, the once mystery-solving partners have a lot more wounds to heal. It sounds like the upcoming “mini opera” scene will be a nice starting point. After all, Betty and Jughead began as friends, so if they can relay that foundation, there’s solid ground to rebuild their love.
