Rocky: Tommy Gunn’s Boxing Record (Every Win & Loss)

Tommy “The Machine” Gunn fought his way to the top of the boxing world in Rocky V, having racked up an impressive record in his short career. Played by the grand-nephew of John Wayne and real-life professional boxer Tommy Morrison, the character served as the main antagonist of the fifth installment in the Rocky series. That also makes him the second-to-last opponent faced by Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) in the movies.

Years before becoming a mentor to Michael B. Jordan’s character in 2015’s Creed, Rocky had a much different protégé in Tommy Gunn. Following the big fight with Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Rocky was forced into retirement by a medical issue. He found that by training other young boxers he could remain active in the business. Seeing potential in Tommy, Rocky helped develop the athlete into a competent boxer, but unfortunately, his great success and his manipulative manager corrupted Tommy and twisted his views of Rocky. After winning the world heavyweight championship (but not the respect of the public), Tommy antagonized Rocky into fighting him on the street. In the end, Tommy was defeated by the very person who helped launch his career.

His record was impressive even so. Overall, Tommy Gunn had a boxing record of 23-0-0 in the Rocky franchise. That of course includes his win over Union Cane (Mike Williams) for the title but doesn’t count his loss to Rocky at the end of the film. Losing to Stallone’s character in a street fight may have stained his reputation, but it didn’t have any effect on his fight record. After all, the fight with Rocky wasn’t an official boxing match. For this reason, Tommy is technically considered undefeated in-canon.

His 23-0-0 record is a reflection of how brief his career was. His downfall occurred just as quickly as his rise. He smeared the competition throughout the timeframe of Rocky V but was ultimately brought down by his own mistakes and ambition. As for what happened to him after that, Tommy’s fate hasn’t been discussed on-screen. With Rocky V being a movie that even Stallone himself has admitted to disliking, it’s not surprising that the franchise doesn’t often revisit its events and characters, including Morrison’s Tommy Gunn.

However, Stallone revealed what he thought happened to Tommy Gunn after the movie, saying in a 2010 interview that he believed the boxer “succumbed to a life of a mediocre fighter” and eventually became a “second rate wrestler.” What this indicates is that his post-Rocky V boxing record may no longer be perfect. It could be that Tommy did fight professionally again after the movie, but wasn’t able to repeat his success. Having taken a “mediocre” turn, Tommy “The Machine” Gunn seemingly faded into obscurity, and devolved into – as Stallone called him – Tommy “Boom Boom” Gunn.
