Romy And Michele 2: Lisa Kudrow Responds To Potential Sequel

Lisa Kudrow responds to the potential for a Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion sequel. Kudrow starred as Michele in the 1997 comedy that co-starred Mira Sorvino as Romy, both starring as two dim-witted, but good-natured best friends who create an elaborate lie to impress their classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. The film was directed by David Mirkin (Heartbreakers) and co-starred Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Justin Theroux. The film was a modest hit that has since gained notoriety as a cult classic of the ’90s.

Kudrow starred in the film while in the midst of her run on the popular sitcom Friends, which kept her busy through 2004. The actress continued to star in a long string of comedies, from features to TV shows, including films like Analyze This, Happy Endings, Easy A, The Girl On The Train, and Neighbors, while appearing in shows like Scandal, Web Therapy, The Comeback, Bojack Horseman, and Space Force. Sorvino won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1996 for her role in Mighty Aphrodite and is known for her roles in The Replacement Killers, Falling Skies, American Crime Story, and Shining Vale.

In an interview with People, Kudrow responds to the potential for a sequel to her and Sorvino’s cult classic, saying that she’d ultimately be interested in a Romy & Michele 2 and that the film’s original writer, Robin Schiff, has “definitely been approached to start thinking of a sequel.” So long as the script is right, Kudrow says, “Yeah, I think it could be fun,” to do a sequel to the film. Both actresses reprised their Romy & Michele characters as presenters for the 2020 SAG Awards, which re-ignited talk of the pair making a proper sequel.

During that 2020 event, Sorvino expressed her own interest in returning to the characters in a sequel, saying, “I know that Lisa and that Robin Schiff is interested in it. Maybe Alan [Cumming] is interested in it. I don’t know. I heard that maybe Janeane [Garofalo] is interested in it.” While Sorvino relented that the property and possibility of a Romy & Michele 2 happening was “up to Disney,” the actress is more than willing to return to the role. “I love Lisa and I would do anything just to work with her again in any capacity. That would be a joy.” Sorvino just completed work on the drama Sound of Freedom and will next appear in the Lamborghini biopic alongside Frank Grillo and Gabriel Byrne. Kudrow, meanwhile, will next be seen in the Disney+ adaptation of Better Nate Than Ever.

It’s been 25 years since Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, which is a big gap between the original and any kind of sequel, but there seems to be limitless potential with both stars interested in returning. While a theatrical endeavor is unlikely, a Romy & Michele 2 would be a great fit for streaming, and if Disney still owns the rights, then an R-rated follow-up wouldn’t be out of the question for Disney+ or Hulu. As the streaming wars continue, it only opens the door for more projects to come to fruition, be it new content or long-awaited sequels to beloved franchises like Romy & Michele’s High-School Reunion.
