Rupert Grint Teases Servant Season 3 Feels Like A Very Different Show

Rupert Grint, star of Apple TV’s Servant has teased that the third season of the show will feel like a whole new series. Grint, known for his work as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, has made steps to go beyond his association with the role, starring in Snatch on Crackle and making an appearance on Broadway with It’s Only a Play in 2014. He also joined Instagram in November 2020 to celebrate the birth of his daughter, setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest account to reach one million followers within four hours and one minute.

Servant follows Dorothy and Sean Turner, a well-off Philadelphia couple who hire a woman to care for their newborn. The titular servant’s arrival brings about strange and frightening events in the couple’s home, leading to tense horror that gives the show its edge. Grint plays Julian, the brother of Dorothy and functioning alcoholic, who represents the outside world within the narrative of the series.

Grint, in an interview with ET Canada, talks about how the show will feel different in season 3, emphasizing the larger role of the world outside the house. He also talks about Julian sobering up and trying to be a better person, the biggest challenge for the character so far. Grint also mentions how sobriety will force Julian to contend with the guilt he feels for his role in the incident that incites the show’s storyline. Read Grint’s full quote below:

“It feels like a very different show…We see a little bit more outside of the house this time, so it was kind of a glimpse of the outside world. As well for Julian, he is very different, he has sobered up, he’s really trying consciously to be a better person and to be a healthier person and start this whole regime of like exercising and things. But also, he kind of clears his mind so he can really face the guilt that he has been holding onto from the incident… The core of the show is about people who are not grieving, so it was really interesting to see that side of him without all of his devices to distract him from that.”

Servant season 3 premieres on January 21, 2022 and has already been renewed for a fourth and final season by Apple TV. The series is executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, known for his films Old and Split, who directed several of the episodes, including the pilot. Servant season 2 also featured episodes directed by Julia Ducournau, who recently won the Palme d’Or for her body horror film, Titane.

Servant represents one of horror’s few offerings on the small screen, horror being a very tricky genre to manage, especially over a long-term serialized story, since it requires tension and fear of the unknown, which is harder to maintain the longer a story continues. Shyamalan has teased Servant‘s increasing scope, implying that the new season will find horror beyond the haunted house trappings of the first two seasons. With the series decidedly ending after its fourth year, Servant will hopefully be able to continue the razor-sharp directing and dark humor that made the first two seasons so compelling.
