Ryan Reynolds Says Green Lantern Isn’t As Bad As He Thought After Watching For First Time

Ryan Reynolds says his Green Lantern movie wasn’t as bad as he thought it was. Reynolds announced yesterday that he would be watching the 2011 film for the first time in honor of the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Before Green Lantern, Reynolds had made a brief appearance as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine before attempting to launch another franchise with Hal Jordan’s origin story. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way.

Green Lantern was panned by critics and only made $219 million at the box office against a $200 million budget. Any hopes of a sequel were quickly squashed and Reynolds infamously moved on to reprise the role of Wade Wilson in Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Reynolds joked about Green Lantern in Deadpool 2‘s post-credits scene and admitted in 2018 that he had never seen a fully finished version of the film. That all changed last night.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Reynolds live tweeted his reactions to Green Lantern. Reynolds starred alongside his future wife, Blake Lively, in the film, as well as Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and Angela Basset. After watching the film, the actor said on Twitter that Green Lantern was nothing to fear,” praising the cast and crew for the work they put into a film he had been to afraid to watch. Reynolds goes on to say that next time he won’t wait a decade to watch one of his own films again.

Ever since the announcement of Snyder’s Justice League, rumors swirled that Reynolds could reprise his role as Hal Jordan. Snyder himself has hinted at the presence of the Green Lantern Corps in the DCEU, most notably in flashbacks. When news arose that a jaw-dropping hero cameo would close out the Snyder Cut, many wondered if it could be Green Lantern and Reynolds used his social media to stoke the flames of speculation, as per usual. Reynolds’ watch party is likely just all in good fun to support what is shaping up to be a massive cinematic event.

The unprecedented release of the Snyder Cut on HBO Max will be one for the books, a rare case where fan campaigning fueled the streamer’s decision to revive the now legendary director’s cut of the maligned 2017 film. Unfortunately, Green Lantern is unlikely to get such treatment. If the DCEU were to integrate Hal Jordan into their lineup, it would likely be in an entirely new form. Reynolds is busy with the Deadpool franchise as he gears up to introduced the Merc With a Mouth to the MCU and his watch party and live tweet-a-long was more than likely the actor having fun on social media.
