Ryan Reynolds Wanted to Play the Wally West Flash

During the Deadpool 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con, star Ryan Reynolds said the other superhero he would have loved to play is Wally West a.k.a. The Flash. Reynolds has already played two different versions of Deadpool, and also joined the cinematic world of DC in 2011’s ill-fated Green Lantern, but the R-rated version of Wade Wilson who debuted in 2016’s Deadpool was his first truly successful superhero role, and the one that stuck.

Unlike most of the movies featured in Hall H this year, Deadpool 2 has already been released, but tonight’s Comic-Con events include the first ever screening of the Super Duper Cut of the movie, which will be available on home video in August. The extended version includes extra scenes like Deadpool killing baby Hitler, and Deadpool inviting Wolverine to join X-Force.

When asked during the panel if there were any other superheroes he would have liked to play, Reynolds responded:

“I would say Wolverine, but God, I would be terrible. Honestly, I wanted to be the Flash, the Wally West version, but I think all of those ships have sailed.”

Reynolds’ co-star Stefan Kapičić (who plays the metal-skinned giant, Colossus) answered the same question, saying that he would still like to play Kraven the Hunter or The Punisher. Jon Bernthal is currently playing the latter role over on Netflix, but the role of Kraven the Hunter is still open and last year Sony Pictures was rumored to be developing a Kraven spinoff movie. Still, even if Kapičić doesn’t get that role, there’s a decent chance that he’ll return as Colossus in Drew Goddard’s upcoming X-Force movie.

As for The Flash, Wally West was played by Keiynan Lonsdale over on The CW – first in The Flash, and then in Legends of Tomorrow – though he recently left Legends and there’s no news yet of when, where, or if he’ll return. On the big screen, Ezra Miller played the Barry Allen version of The Flash in Justice League, and is set to return in his own solo movie – and though development has been slow-moving, the directors are still optimistically targeting a 2020 release. It seems that, for now at least, Reynolds will have to settle for starring in just one hugely successful ongoing superhero movie franchise.
