Sam Wilson’s Shield Throwing Is More Impressive Than Steve Rogers

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Sam Wilson training to become Captain America, showing him getting used to the shield and eventually being able to throw it like Steve Rogers did, but his shield throwing is more impressive than that of the original Captain America. After building the Infinity Gauntlet arc for a bit over a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga came to an end with Spider-Man: Far From Home after Avengers: Endgame saw most of the original Avengers retire. The MCU is now moving forward with its Phase 4, which will cover both movies and TV shows, and starting this new era were the TV series WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Set a couple of months after the events of Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier followed Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) as he decided whether or not to take the mantle of Captain America as Steve Rogers intended, and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who continued to struggle with his past as the Winter Soldier and the consequences of it. At the beginning of the series, Sam gave the shield up and the government chose a decorated member of the U.S. Army, John Walker, as the new Captain America. After proving to be unworthy of such a title, Sam took the shield back, trained, and officially became Captain America, showing that not only is he worthy of the mantle, but he’s also highly skilled.

Sam Wilson is one of the few heroes in the MCU who doesn’t have superpowers and hasn’t gone through experiments and more that can grant him enhanced abilities, though that doesn’t make him any less of a hero. Sam’s “powers” come from his suit and weapons, with a specialized winged jetpack that allows him to fly, combat goggles, guns, and Redwing, a drone that has assisted him during various missions, among others. As for his abilities, he’s a master pilot, expert martial artist, marksman, acrobat, tactician, and engineer. Another weapon Sam has mastered is the Captain America shield, throwing and catching it just like Steve Rogers used to, but Sam’s shield throwing is more impressive, simply because he isn’t a Super Soldier like Steve.

Steve Rogers became the hero everyone now knows thanks to the Super Soldier Serum, which granted him some special abilities and skills. Among Steve Rogers’ “powers” is enhanced physiology, meaning that bodily functions like his strength, durability, speed, agility, senses, healing, reflexes, and more reached superhuman levels, but the serum also affected him mentally, turning him into the “perfect” specimen of human development and conditioning. The combination of enhanced reflexes, agility, senses, and improved mental aptitude, along with the unique properties of the shield, allowed him to throw and catch the shield as he pleased and needed.

Sam’s shield throwing, then, is more impressive than Steve’s simply because he doesn’t have the same enhanced abilities as his friend, and everything he can achieve is thanks to his intense training. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is only the beginning of Sam’s time as Captain America, so there surely are more talents to be discovered and more skills to be learned.
