Scream Director Asks Fans Not To Spoil Movie For Others

Scream is set for release this Friday, January 14, and director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin has asked fans not to spoil the new sequel movie when it comes out. The fifth entry in the Scream franchise, 2002’s Scream will see the return of franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Roger L. Jackson as the voice of iconic serial killer Ghostface. The legacy cast will feature newcomers Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, and Jack Quaid.

This year’s Scream will continue the story of Ghostface, a masked killer who uses threatening phone calls to scare his victims before killing them with a knife. A direct sequel to Scream 4, the new film will continue the canon of the franchise while making a new start, hence the official title being Scream and not Scream 5. Early reviews of Scream have been extremely positive, with many commending its ability to bring fresh life into the slasher genre, similar to what the original Scream achieved in 1996. In fact, many reviewers have called the movie one of the best entries in the entire Scream franchise.

Director Bettinelli-Olpin tweeted an open letter to fans of the Scream series, asking them not to spoil the movie for others. The reason the filmmaker gives for his plea is that the cast and crew have worked for “two years” on the film, and want fans to experience it the way they did: “spoiler free.” He then says a heartfelt thanks to fans and end his post with “#ForWes,” a tribute to original Scream director and horror icon, the late Wes Craven. Craven, having directed all the previous Scream movies, as well as other horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Last House on the Left, passed away in 2015, with the new Scream paying tribute to his legacy. Bettinelli-Olpin and his co-director Tyler Gillett have made their names with horror films Ready Or Not and Southbound. Both directors, and original star Campbell, have also talked about doing more films if 2022’s Scream proves a success.

Horror is a very delicate genre, where the scares come from underneath and between shots, through editing, camerawork, lighting, and mise en scene; all of which are necessary to give the audience the intended experience. The original Scream taught horror fans that horror can be self-aware and funny without sacrificing the tension needed for a good scare, and that comedy and horror both rely on pacing and buildup to work. With early reviews for Scream being so positive, it appears that the new directors have found the blend that makes the franchise unique and successful, and fans will have to (and should) wait see for themselves how it all plays out.
