Sean Astin Joins Perry Mason Season 2 Cast

HBO has added four new recurring cast members to the upcoming Perry Mason season 2, including Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin. The period drama is a reboot, based on the titular 1930s detective character created by Eric Stanley Gardner. HBO’s rendition shows Mason, portrayed by Matthew Rhys, as a Los Angeles lawyer tasked with handling complex cases as the U.S. grapples with the Great Depression.

Variety reports that HBO has added Astin, Tommy Dewey (Casual), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), and Jen Tullock (Before You Know It) as series regulars for Perry Mason season 2. Astin will be portraying Sunny Gryce, an entrepreneurial grocery store owner who keeps the American Dream close, but his hard-earned cash closer. Gryce hires Perry to work for him and wants to make sure he’s getting the most out of his money.

Dewey will take on Brooks McCutcheon, the heir to an oil fortune who’s trying to prove himself outside of his family’s successful name. However, he doesn’t seem to have the same finesse as his mogul father. Raci will play Brooks’ no-nonsense father Lydell McCutcheon, the pioneer of the oil empire. Tullock will portray screenwriter Anita St. Pierre, an independent woman paving a life for herself in a society run by men. The newbies will be joined by recurring Perry Mason cast members including Justin Kirk and Eric Lange.

Perry Mason season 2 will be taken over by The Knick showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler. HBO has yet to confirm a release date for the second season after the reboot initially premiered in 2020. But for fans anxiously awaiting the return, it sounds like Perry Mason will feature an even bigger cast of unusual characters navigating a rough and tumble world.
