Sex And The City: 10 Episodes To Watch If You Miss Miranda & Steve

It’s no secret that Miranda Hobbes is a fan-favorite character on Sex and the City, and it’s fitting that her major relationship on the show is one that fans are known to root for. Although viewers see the snarky and cynical lawyer date a variety of (mostly unpleasant) Manhattan bachelors, her romance with Steve Brady is easily one of her most important character arcs.

The high-powered attorney and the Queens-born bartender’s relationship plays out over five seasons and takes on a plethora of forms, from burgeoning partners, awkward exes, and friends to co-parents and newlyweds. Amidst these drastic evolutions, some episodes of the series stand out as highlighting particular conflicts, touching moments, and otherwise iconic moments in the pair’s story. Thankfully for fans of the couple, for every time circumstances prevent them from enjoying a successful relationship, they equally share a memorable instance of heartwarming (if nontraditional) romance.

10 “No Ifs, Ands, or Butts” (Season 3, Episode 5)

The theme of Steve’s naivety (and arguably, immaturity) causing conflict with the no-nonsense Miranda is explored in this episode, which takes place during the couple’s second attempt at dating.

Steve is convinced he can land a million-dollar prize shot at a Knicks game and wants Miranda to support his new practice routine. What begins as Miranda dismissing Steve’s pipedream quickly becomes a metaphor for Miranda’s lack of faith in their relationship. It’s one of many times fans see the couple negotiate differing values, as the hot-shot lawyer who understandably has her mind elsewhere eventually shows up at the neighborhood basketball court to cheer her boyfriend on.

9 “Belles of the Balls” (Season 4, Episode 10)

This touching episode finds Miranda and Steve, broken up for some time, continuing to reconnect after Steve’s testicular cancer has gone into remission. While Steve struggles with the loss that his treatment entailed, Miranda provides support to her now-friend and accompanies him to a consultation for a prosthesis.

A glum Steve questioning whether he’ll ever be found attractive again leads the pair to briefly rekindle their sexual relationship, a choice which fans of the show know will result in the pair’s only child. While one major life event wraps up in this episode, another is unwittingly begun.

8 “Drama Queens” (Season 3, Episode 7)

This episode finds Miranda and Steve in total domestic bliss. To the chagrin of her girlfriends, especially Samantha, Miranda finds she couldn’t be happier with their Saturday night routine of lasagna and ice cream, spooning, and even laundry. This peaceful scene is completely disrupted when Miranda discovers an unpleasant stain while doing Steve’s laundry, and wonders how she only now sees the couple is in a rut.

It’s a moment of Sex and the City‘s sometimes juvenile humor illustrating the broader issues in relationships that viewers can relate to. Thankfully for fans of Miranda and Steve, this chronicle of the couple’s quiet happiness proves you can find newness even in routine: the pair’s final scene finds them getting it on atop the washing machine.

7 “Unoriginal Sin” (Season 5, Episode 2)

This episode at the beginning of Sex and the City‘s brief fifth season finds exes Miranda and Steve joining forces to organize Brady’s baptism – a ceremony whose importance to Steve’s family catches Miranda off guard, but which she agrees to under certain conditions.

It’s a milestone for the co-parents: they’re forced to begin making joint decisions for their son, but also to begin merging families in some respect as Miranda meets Steve’s mom, the wisecracking Mary Brady – a character who will later prove central to the pair’s married life in Brooklyn.

6 “Catch-38” (Season 6, Episode 15)

In the aftermath of their touching wedding, Miranda and Steve continue to negotiate the sometimes differing perspectives that led to their breakups in previous seasons.

While on their honeymoon at a remote cabin, Steve just wants to stay in bed and cuddle all day – a throwback to his love for snuggling introduced in season two – but Miranda is getting cabin fever with no TV, radio, or cell phone charger. This episode shows how the couple’s communication and ability to compromise has grown, as the restless Miranda concedes to more cuddles and Steve agrees to cut the trip short.

5 “To Market, To Market” (Season 6, Episode 1)

The tables are turned for Miranda and Steve’s relationship in Sex and the City‘s sixth-season premiere. While Miranda initiated their two breakups and demonstrated something of an aversion to romance throughout their relationship, she is bewildered and a bit frustrated to find herself back in love with her co-parent.

The episode turns heartbreaking for Miranda when she finally works up the courage to tell Steve her feelings (and apologize for lashing out) at dinner – but not before he suggests he won’t crowd her as much anymore thanks to a new girlfriend. It’s a thankfully temporary case of boy-who-cried-wolf for the guarded but lovable attorney.

4 “Old Dogs, New D*cks” (Season 2, Episode 9)

Having overcome her sense that their one-night stand will lead nowhere, Miranda launches into a new relationship and discovers some important differences in her and Steve’s schedules and lifestyles. The 9-to-5er struggles to stay awake until Steve is finished bartending, and gets fed up when he’s the one who passes out. Thankfully, the spat is temporary and the couple overcomes their difficulties.

A classic for Miranda and Steve diehards and housing one of Sex and the City‘s most relatable plotlines, this episode documents the messy but worthwhile process of learning about a brand new person that any person who’s dated around can attest to.

3 “One” (Season 6, Episode 12)

After a drawn-out will-they-won’t-they arc since Miranda’s pregnancy in season four, the fan-favorite couple finally admits their feelings to each other at Brady’s first birthday party.

The couple realizes each other is “the one” just after Steve finds a “1”-shaped candle for Brady’s cake. With two breakups and multiple instances of emotionally messy, broken-up casual sex in their past, this episode finds the pair finally putting aside their reservations – and their current relationships – to enter into a stable coupling that will last them the rest of the series.

2 “The Man, The Myth, The Viagra” (Season 2, Episode 8)

Miranda meets Steve in this episode thanks to Carrie’s last-minute cancellation of their dinner plans. When a disgruntled Miranda rudely orders a drink from the bartender and he counters with some cheekiness and attitude, she decides to invite him over and they have an uproarious night of lovemaking.

This episode is the perfect introduction to the pair’s long-lasting dynamic: Steve’s idealism and Miranda’s opposing cynicism. Steve confesses he likes Miranda and wants to pursue something meaningful, but Miranda’s jadedness causes her to push him away – until, of course, the uber-romantic final scene where Miranda apologizes and they kiss in the rain.

1 “The Ick Factor” (Season 6, Episode 14)

Just two episodes after their long-awaited reunion, Miranda and Steve become engaged in this episode which ponders if, when,  and why romantic gestures are really necessary.

Miranda, ever the nontraditionalist, abruptly proposes to Steve over cheap beers after they witness an elderly couple bickering on the street. Their quest for a fitting and not-too-cheesy wedding leads them to stumble upon the perfect community garden. The couple’s wedding is a beautiful moment and when the girls rally around Samantha’s cancer diagnosis at the reception, the show emphasizes that Miranda’s new family isn’t a replacement for her old one.
