She-Hulk Donny Blaze Actor Details Episode 4 Magic Scenes

Donny Blaze actor, Rhys Coiro, recently detailed the magician’s scenes in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 4. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry stars Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a defense attorney tasked with defending superhumans in a court of law, such as Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth). She is joined by Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and Benedict Wong as the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong.

Episode 4 finds Wong enjoying an episode of The Sopranos when he is interrupted by an interdimensional portal which drops Madisynn (Patty Guggenheim) next to him. Revealed to have been sent to a dangerous dimension by the stage magician Donny Blaze, Wong vows to use the law to bar the former Kamar-Taj student from practicing the mystic arts. Throughout episode 4, Blaze can be seen performing typical stage illusions and sleight-of-hand while ineffectively using real magic to astound his audience. His poor skills eventually backfire when he accidently summons a portal to a world filled with flying demons.

In a recent interview with THR, Coiro detailed Blazes’ stage magic scenes in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 4. The actor stated that they had a magician as a technical adviser on-set that Coiro worked with as they “wanted to do as many tricks as possible in the show.” Coiro admits that he studied the craft of magic in preparation for his role and was in awe at the Marvel stunt team for creating some of the more elaborate sequences. Read more of what Coiro had to say below.

Yeah, there was a lot of practical sleight-of-hand magic that took place. I really wanted there to be as much as possible. I think that the juxtaposition of the actual Kamar-Taj mystic arts with the sleight-of-hand magic is great. In the script, it says, “He does a magic show,” you know? So, we had time with the amazing, world-class Marvel stunt team who have their own building, like their own little laboratory, where they’re crafting these moments. We got to get in there with them and work on all these things, and sort of craft the magical acts. We put together that floating sequence. And the studying of magic was really fun for me. It’s so interesting how it’s a subdiscipline of performing. There’s magic and clowning and stunt performing, and it’s fun to explore these other areas of performing and how they all interrelate.

Coiro, who is also the husband of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law director Kat Coiro, dedicated himself to his craft by not only studying stage magic but also performing several of the sleight-of-hand techniques himself. The actor’s preparation was evident in the episode as his performance as Blaze accurately simulated many classic stage magician performers, combining the close-hand magic of David Blaine with the visual aesthetic of the open-shirt shock magician, Criss Angel. Although the two professional magicians have taken years to hone their skill, Coiro effectively simulated their talents in the least desirable way.

Coiro follows actors like Christian Bale and Edward Norton, who both portrayed magicians in their films The Prestige and The Illusionist respectively, learning how to perform much of their tricks seen in their movies. However, unlike Bale and Norton, Coiro had the added challenge of being a convincingly terrible magician. Although Coiro is only listed for one episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, with the series’ creator open to a season 2, audiences can only hope that Blaze may return to “wow” his audiences with stunning illusions once again.
