Simu Liu Jokes About His Old Stock Photos With Met Gala Images

Simu Liu can’t resist making another joke about his stock photo past, this time with new shots of him at the Met Gala. Liu has had a pretty eventful 2021. Though his Marvel debut Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was pushed back to later in the year, he still made headlines throughout the first half of 2021 over the cancellation of his hit sitcom Kim’s Convenience. Dissatisfied with how the cancellation came about, Liu has spoken openly about the issues that persisted behind the scenes, making him a strong advocate for better representation in front of and behind the camera.

Then, at long last, Shang-Chi arrived in theaters. The eagerly anticipated Marvel movie arrived in theaters earlier this month and quickly became a bona fide success. After scoring glowing reviews from critics, Shang-Chi broke Labor Day box office records over its opening weekend and is on track to possibly even become the highest-grossing movie of the year. Though Liu’s star has been on the rise for some time, it has ascended to even greater heights since the movie came out.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Highlighting this was Liu’s presence at Monday night’s Met Gala. The exclusive, high-profile event returned after skipping 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Liu was one of the many A-list stars in attendance. He shared some pictures of himself from the event on social media and poked fun at his past photos, writing, “No more stock photos for this guy.” Liu added a winky face for good measure, as well as some notes of gratitude. Since Shang-Chi‘s debut, Liu’s past as a stock photo model has gone viral. Fans have been quick to edit his stock photos into Marvel projects like Captain America: Civil War and WandaVision, and Liu himself has even used one to react to Shang-Chi‘s incredible opening. From stock photos to the Met Gala, Liu has truly come a long way, and things are only bound to get wilder for him now that he’s officially a member of the MCU.

Aside from the Marvel projects that are almost certainly in his future, Liu has a number of exciting gigs on the way. He’ll lend his voice to the Disney+ anime series Star Wars: Visions, and he has a pair of movies in the works: Arthur the King and One True Loves.Liu has been putting in the work for years, but he’s finally become a household name who gets to attend the Met Gala. We can’t wait to see what he does next.
