Spawn And Batman Are Friends In Mortal Kombat 11

Apparently, the Mortal Kombat 11 version of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is friends with Batman, according to one of the character’s intro phrases. Announced previously as the last character in the current iteration of Mortal Kombat 11’s DLC Kombat Pack, gameplay featuring Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11 was only recently shown to the public for the first time during the Final Kombat 2020 Esports fighting tournament, which saw longtime Mortal Kombat champion Sonic Fox proving once again that he is one of the best kombatants around.

Spawn looks to be a perfect addition to the Mortal Kombat 11 roster, as his hellish backstory and brutal fighting style fits right into the Mortal Kombat universe. With vicious chain attacks and the ability to turn invisible, Spawn is yet another in a long line of Mortal Kombat crossover characters which has seen everyone from Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies and Kratos from God of War to an entire team of DC Universe characters entering the Mortal Kombat fighting arena.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Now, thanks to some of Spawn’s intro dialog, captured and embedded below from Twitter user @Reece_Lively, fans know that this particular version of Todd McFarlane’s hellish hero has had some sort of interaction with DC Comics’ caped crusader. As visible in the video below, Mortal Kombat 11’s Spawn lands on the ground in front of Raiden, who longtime fans may remember was indeed around and playable during Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, causing the Thunder God to say “You remind me of another dark knight.” Spawn, surprisingly, seems to know exactly who Raiden is talking about. “The billion-dollar crusader? He’s a friend,” Spawn replies. Raiden seems to show a little bit of respect for Spawn then, perhaps remembering his own time spent with Batman, as he says “It seems we are both well-traveled.” And then, of course, they try to kill each other.

It’s interesting that neither Raiden nor Spawn mentions Batman by name, although it’s obvious who they are talking about, especially since Warner Brothers owns Netherrealm Studios, and The Joker is literally a character in Mortal Kombat 11 already. However, it’s likely that mentioning Batman’s name simply wasn’t necessary, as everyone can clearly determine who they’re talking about based on words like “crusader” and “dark knight” even though, as Raiden accurately points out, these words could also be used to describe Spawn himself.

This wouldn’t be the first time Spawn and Batman were shown to have interacted with each other, as a one-shot comic from 1994 written by Frank Miller shows the pair teaming up after constantly getting into violent fights with each other because each hero thought the other was their enemy. While it’s unclear if this same incident is what brought Spawn and Batman together in the Mortal Kombat 11 universe, it’s nice to see nods to DC Comics history brought out in such a way… and perhaps it could be a secret hint that Batman is coming in the next Kombat Pack.
