Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Producer Hints At MCU Crossover

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) producer Christopher Miller hints at a Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover for the film. The animated movie serves as a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and sees Miles Morales recruited by Gwen Stacy to journey into the multiverse to face a powerful villain. Though said antagonist is still unknown, the duo will unite with both new and familiar other Spider-People in order to save their worlds from the threat.

Shameik Moore returns to lead the cast of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Oneas Miles alongside fellow franchise vets Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen and Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, better known as Spider-Man 2099 who was introduced in the post-credits of the previous film. The sequel will also see Issa Rae joining the animated universe as Jessica Drew, better known as Spider-Woman in the character’s big-screen debut. Development on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) was announced ahead of its predecessor’s release with the first trailer revealing the story to be split into two parts, the first of which arrives this October.

While appearing on a new episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord hinted at an MCU crossover. Though not outright confirming or denying a tie between the two, the former did note the nature of the multiverse and its potential for connections. See what Miller and Lord said below:

Christopher Miller: “The Multiverse is big and wide. And all things grow… Why would you think a Multiverse, in which many things are possible, that [those things are] not related?”

Phil Lord: “Everything’s possible except for this one thing that everyone wants.”

This isn’t the first time Lord and Miller have discussed the possibility of their animated webslinging franchise crossing over with a live-action counterpart. The writers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had explored a potential post-credits scene with cameos from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland though the studio ultimately felt it to be too risky a moment for the film that was already breaking new ground in introducing the concept of a comic book multiverse to the big screen before the MCU or DC Extended Universe. The studio would ultimately find themselves eating their words as the film became a success and the multiverse would break open again for Spider-Man: No Way Home and united Maguire, Garfield and Holland’s webslingers.

Though the doors to the multiverse were seemingly closed in the MCU threequel, Miller’s tease of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse crossing over with the MCU should come as an exciting possibility for fans of both franchises. Holland recently revealed he was approached by producer Amy Pascal on the Spider-Man: No Way Home set about a potential appearance in one of the animated sequels, with his co-stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon also expressing their interest in making that universal jump. Only time will tell if the MCU crossover comes to be when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) hits theaters on October 7.
