Square Enix Is Safe From Final Fantasy Leaks (Because It Lost The Source Codes)

The past two years have seen a huge amount of leaks in the gaming world, but one company can rest easy. Square Enix doesn’t need to worry about any Final Fantasy leaks, as it lost the Final Fantasy games’ source codes years ago.

The first great gaming leak in recent memory was the Pokémon Gold and Silver Space World beta, which contained an early version of Johto, with never-before-seen Pokémon designsThis was followed by a leak of early assets from Pokémon Red and Green. It turned out a hacker was able to download tons of material from Nintendo’s servers, resulting in what is now known as the “Gigaleak.” The Nintendo Gigaleak was filled with content, including early versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. These leaks offer a fascinating glimpse into the development of some of the greatest games of all time.

Almost all of the content from the Gigaleak has involved Nintendo games, and fans have wondered if third-party content will arrive in the future. Companies like Capcom and Konami released many games on the Super Nintendo, after all, so perhaps some of their content will be part of a future leak. One company that fans would love to see involved in the Gigaleak is Square Enix. Back when the company was called Squaresoft, it released tons of classic games on Nintendo systems, including Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and the first six Final Fantasy games.

Why Hackers Can’t Leak Any Early Final Fantasy Assets

Those hoping for early builds of old Squaresoft games filled with unseen content will have to make do with the Nintendo Gigaleak; Square Enix’s library is safe from leaks, since the company lost all of the source codes for its old games. Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda told Game Informer the company doesn’t have the source codes for old games, as there was no reason to archive them. The people at Square had no idea they would be rereleasing classic games on multiple platforms in the future, so it was all discarded or forgotten about. This has resulted in Square Enix releasing emulated versions of its old games or remaking them from scratch.

There is technically a possibility these source codes are out there somewhere, but it’s more likely that they’re lost to time. Then again, the Xbox Live Arcade version of GoldenEye 007 recently leaked online, so anything is possible. Square Enix likely won’t have to worry about any old Final Fantasy source codes showing up in a Gigaleak, unless Nintendo was holding out on the company.
