The episode runtimes for Star Wars: Visionshave been revealed, with each episode ranging from 13 to 22 minutes in length. Releasing on September 22 on Disney+, the anthology series will comprise of 9 standalone animated short films. Each short film is produced by a different Japanese animation studio, with each taking their own approach to the Star Wars galaxy in original tales.
Though Star Wars is no stranger to animation with series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, Star Wars: Resistance, and the more recent Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars: Visions will have a more unique and original approach. Set outside the confines of the Star Wars continuity, each of the animated shorts will allow the creators to explore the galaxy far far away through their own style and perspective, offering truly unique stories. As such, the creatives behind each short are free of most restrictions and guidelines set by previous media, including their runtimes.
As revealed through recently released screeners, each episode’s runtime will range from between 13 to 22 minutes. This will put the runtime of the entire series at roughly 2.5 hours. The social media and review embargos for the series have also been revealed, with social embargos lifting on September 17 and review embargos lifting on September 21.
The given runtimes for the series are understandable – with each short exploring the galaxy outside of the Skywalker Saga and being standalone stories, there isn’t a strict guideline that has to be followed. By allowing the creatives to decide on their own runtime, it would allow each story to be paced to fit within their vision and tell the story they want to without worrying about interconnectivity. As such, even though it takes inspiration from the long-running franchise, each short can stand on its own as an individual piece of entertainment without worrying about its place in the canon.
With this recent reveal paired with the confirmation that the series would be free of canon restrictions, Star Wars: Visions might be the most ambitious project on Lucasfilm’s slate currently. Since the Disney acquisition in 2013, the company has had strict control over what may be canon, with the Lucasfilm Story Group advising each project on how it fits into continuity. However, Star Wars: Visions is free of such oversight, meaning it can offer some of the most distinctive, unique, and visually stunning entries in the franchise to date. It is a first step into unknown territory following years of interconnectivity and canonicity, signaling that it could perhaps lead the way to more loosely connected approaches to the franchise.
