Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 5 Reveals How Eleven Met The Demogorgon

Stranger Things season 1 episode 5 reveals how Eleven first encountered the creature dubbed the Demogorgon. Stranger Things took the work of Stephen King, Steven Spielberg and a whole bunch of classic 1980s movies – from The Goonies to The Thing – and dropped them in a blender. While the show wears its references proudly, the reason it became so popular was down to great characters. Stranger Things has an incredible cast, which makes the horror and genre elements hit all the harder when they’re in danger.

Stranger Things season 1 became one of the most talked about shows of 2016 and dealt with the disappearance of a young boy named Will. While his friends try to solve the mystery, they uncover a parallel dimension, a government conspiracy and a young girl with psychic powers nicknamed Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown (Godzilla: King Of The Monsters). Season 2 would expand the mythology further and while episode 7 detour “The Lost Sister” would prove divisive, the second season was another hit with audiences. The show will return for a third season in July 2019.

Stranger Things season 1 episode 5 “The Flea and the Acrobat” revealed more information on the Upside Down and the creature that’s been stalking Hawkins. Eleven speaks cryptically about the alternate dimension Will is trapped in and the boys later ask their teacher about it, who explains how a tear in space-time could create a gate to a new dimension. Eleven also has a flashback to the first time she encountered the Demogorgon. Eleven was being used by a doctor named Brenner, played by Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket), in a series of experiments designed to test her powers and make her a psychic spy.

Stranger Things season 1 episode 5 reveals how she was placed in a sensory deprivation tank so she could eavesdrop on a Russian agent. This is when she first encountered the Demogorgon in the void of her mind. The experiment was quickly aborted when she became scared, though Brenner insisted she go back into the tank and try to contact the creature. This proved to be an extremely bad idea and the psychic connection created between them led to a gateway being opened between the Upside Down and the real world, allowing the Demogorgon to slip through and wreak havoc.

Eleven’s first encounter with the Demogorgon is one of the eeriest scenes of the first season of Stranger Things and revealed her guilt over connecting with the beast and letting it come through. Initial fan theories suspected the Demogorgon was actually created from Eleven’s own anger and hatred of Brenner, though season 2 would reveal the true origins of the monster.
