Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury Cat Theme Runs Deeper Than Expected

A new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was released by Nintendo, and viewers may have noticed an overwhelming number of cat ears appeared in the video. The title “Bowser’s Fury” is a play on words as the original title introduced the cat power-up as well as the feline antagonist Meowser, but the cat theme runs deeper than anyone expected.

Super Mario 3D World was released for the Wii U in 2013 and was well received by fans of the Super Mario franchise. It introduced a mix of the New Super Mario Bros. hub world and quick progression with 3D Mario’s open levels and platforming. Most notably, it introduced the catsuit power-up which turned Mario and friends into wall-climbing felines. It also introduced one of Bowser’s cutest transformations, Meowser. It seems as if the DLC, Bowser’s Fury, is aiming to capitalize on the beloved cat/Mario combo.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The new trailer for Bowser’s Fury was released at 9 a.m. EST this morning, and it wasn’t long before fans started to notice the DLC’s cat theme was anything but underlying. The trailer showcased a slew of iconic Mario enemies, as well as all the mini-bosses, donning a new set of cat ears. The explorable area is littered with signs and archways that have been cat-eared. But a number of smaller details have also been given a touch of feline charm. All of the game’s foliage has cat-like qualities including eared trees/bushes and flowers shaped like cat paws. However, the cutest change comes in the form of the seagulls sporting their own tiny cat ears.

There are also several litters of normal cats that seem to roam around this tropical paradise. Pictured above is one of the larger cats that appeared in the video, and the trailer showed a lot of smaller felines meandering as cats do. There was also footage of Mario cuddling with a few cats, and when God-Slayer Bowser awakens it seems to turn the cats into evil shadowy nightmares.

The cat theme for Bowser’s Fury surpasses anyone’s expectations, and it makes players question what other feline antics have Nintendo pulled that it didn’t show players in the trailer. When it comes to Super Mario titles, Nintendo tends to go all-out when it comes to minuscule details. If the cat-seagulls are any indication of how much care went into Bowser’s Fury, Mario fans are in for a treat come February 12th.
