Supergirl Casts DC Comics Characters Indigo & Master Jailer

The most recent superhero-based show to join the ranks on TV, Supergirl was created by Ali Adler along with Greg Berlanti, who also serves as producer on The CW’s trio of DC Comics programs: Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Though many fans have wondered whether or not Supergirl will crossover with its fellow DC series within its first season, that decision has yet to be made. But, whether or not Kara Danvers a.k.a. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) receives a visit from Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and/or Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), the producers have plenty planned for the superhero in season 1.

Although the recent reveal of J’onn J’onzz gave Supergirl another powerful ally, she’ll have even more to deal with in upcoming episodes with villains like Silver Banshee, Bizarro, White Martians, and Toyman set to appear. Now, Supergirl has added two more villains, one played by an actress who should be familiar to DC Comics TV fans.

During their panel as the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Warner Bros. Television announced that Laura Vandervoort, who previously played Kara/Supergirl on Smallville, has been cast as the villain Indigo, while Jeff Branson (I Spit On Your Grave) will also be joining the cast as DC Comics character Master Jailer. Both characters were on board Fort Rozz when it crash-landed on Earth – the same crash that brought Astra, Non, and their followers.

The Supergirl producers described Indigo as “a living, strong-willed supercomputer that was sentenced to Fort Rozz after turning against the people of Krypton [who] will let nothing stand in her way.” Master Jailer, a guard on Fort Rozz who “showed no mercy” is also on Earth and he is “hellbent on catching all of the Fort Rozz escapees and brutally bringing them to justice.”

Although the description of Indigo hints that she will be a villain, Vandervoort will be joining Supergirl as a recurring character, perhaps indicating she is one of female superheroes Adler teased last month. In the comics, before it’s revealed that Indigo is actually the villain Brainiac 8, she acts as a hero and fights alongside metahumans on the Outsiders team. If Supergirl chooses not to explore the Brainiac part of the character’s storyline – whether because of conflicts with other DC properties or not – Indigo could prove to be another powerful ally for Kara as well as another female superhero on the show.

Of course, that hasn’t been confirmed, and all we know about Indigo and Master Jailer are their connections to Fort Rozz – with the description of Master Jailer leading us to believe his interests fall more in line with the DEO and Supergirl. But, if Indigo is introduced as a villain and transitions to a hero, the opposite could be true of Master Jailer, whose methods of showing no mercy possibly putting him at odds with Supergirl’s beliefs. That being said, though, how exactly Indigo and Master Jailer fit into Supergirl remains to be seen when they join the show – though at the least, Vandervoort’s appearance offers a nice reference for DC Comics fans that tuned into Smallville.
