Superman’s Bisexuality Leads To Big Sales For DC Comics

Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 ahead!

DC Comics recently confirmed that Jonathan Kent, Metropolis’ new Superman, is bisexual, and the overwhelming support from the public has led to an “unprecedented” number of orders for the upcoming Superman: Son of Kal-El #5. Superman, the son of the original Man of Steel, will begin a romantic relationship with his fellow Daily Planet reporter and friend Jay Nakamura in the next issue. The news of Superman getting a boyfriend has led to support from the comics and LGBTQ+ community, with many happy about the inclusion of bisexual representation.

The publisher has not released any specific numbers of orders for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, however it truly would be unprecedented for the fifth issue in a series to out-perform sales of the series inaugural issue. It is commonly known that the typical trend for comic series is that their sales hit a peak at the release of a series debut issue, and gradually decline in sales as the series continues. Superman: Son of Kal-El has already been receiving rave reviews, calling it one of the best series currently on shelves, and the increased attention on it will surely continue to attract more readers and critics globally.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, from writer Tom Taylor, artist John Timms, colorist Hi-Fi, and letterer Dave Sharpe, has already sold more copies than the debut issue of the series, DC Comics announced. The positive response to the upcoming issue has been so impressive that DC Comics is re-releasing issues #1-4 of the Superman: Son of Kal-El. Bisexual representation in mainstream media is severely lacking, making this an important step for DC to take in their continuing efforts to make their Omniverse as inclusive and equitable as possible. A small but very vocal contingent of people criticized Jon Kent’s coming out, believing that the move was an example of comics being too “woke.” The unparalleled jump in sales for the upcoming issue clearly shows that efforts to increase inclusivity in comics is being incredibly well received by the DC Comics community.

DC Comics has worked hard over the past several years to increase the inclusion of LGBTQ+ voices in their series, but something about Superman coming out as a queer man has had a more profound impact than the coming out of other queer characters. Recently, fan favorite Tim Drake, the Red Robin, came out as bisexual, in a move that did not surprise most die hard fans. However Superman has always been viewed as the “ideal American man,” rugged, strong, and straight. Having Jon Kent come out as bisexual is an exciting twist on a classically straight-coded character, which is evidenced by this unprecedented number of orders.

Showing support for the current run of Superman: Son of Kal-El is a great way to tell DC Comics that LGBTQ+ representation is important for fans, and will hopefully lead to the more casual inclusion of queer characters in the future. Be sure to check out Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 and support DC’s other LGBTQ+ characters, like the upcoming Aquaman: The Becoming mini-series.
