Swamp Thing: Green Hell is A Twisted New Epic

DC Comics has revealed that the Avatar of the Green will be getting a new three-issue Black Label comic, Swamp Thing: Green Hell. This prestige format series will be written by Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) with artwork by Doug Mahnke (Final Crisis). As a Black Label book, this DC imprint takes beloved characters and gears them towards mature audiences in stories that can be read as stand-alone epics. Though Swamp Thing is certainly no stranger to mature stories with the character having marvelous runs appealing to the darker side of the DC Universe.

The first Swamp Thing was Alex Olsen, created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, who first appeared in House of Secrets #92. However when this character became a hit, he was given his own series, and Alec Holland took up the mantle in Swamp Thing #1, also created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The character has gone through several transformations over the year, probably most notably when Alan Moore joined the book. Recently, DC introduced a new Swamp Thing. The current person serving as Swamp Thing is Levi Kamei, created by Ram V and Mike D. Perkins for their 10-issue limited series. However, Swamp Thing: Green Hell will be creating the most monstrous version of the character yet.

The December solicits in DC Connect #17 provide a sneak peek and information for Swamp Thing: Green Hell. The visuals revealed below include the main cover by Doug Mahnke, a variant cover by Christian Ward (ODY-C, Black Bolt), and a wonderfully disturbing thread that perfectly corresponds to DC’s point that this book will be “Gruesome, gory and chilling—the perfect winter read.” There will also be an as-yet unrevealed 1:25 variant cover by Francesco Francavilla (Wereworld, Afterlife with Archie). The colorist for the series is David Baron (JLA).

Also described as “a dark, dystopian tale for the ages,” Swamp Thing: Green Hell takes place in a future where humanity is dwindling down in a flooded world. As a result, all the Parliaments decide to begin life anew by working together to create a new Swamp Thing to take down the rest of humanity. The solicit information hints at Alec Holland being the solution to fighting against this new creature, but apparently, he’s has been dead and gone for decades.

The first of the three Swamp Thing: Green Hell books will be available in comic book stores on December 28, 2021, for $6.99. The 48-page book will be in prestige format (8 ½” × 10 7/8″) and take place in a darker Black Label story that doesn’t sound like it will affect the regular continuity book starring Levi Kamui as Swamp Thing. The character of Swamp Thing already has numerous dark stories to give readers chills, so it will be interesting to see if the distinction of the Black Label can push the character into even creepier territory. It’s a tough task, but considering it’s in the talented hand of Lemire and Mahnke, this sounds like a very exciting time for Swamp Thing fans.
