Teen Wolf Movie Star Details Character Prep for Dr. Alan Deaton’s Return

The actor behind Teen Wolfs Dr. Alan Deaton speaks about his preparation for bringing the character back to the screen. Seth Gilliam played Deaton through all six seasons of Teen Wolf’s successful run. His character was something of a mentor to Scott and his friends, providing them with information about all things supernatural. Deaton was not a primary member of the McCall pack, but he was instrumental in their growth throughout the show, and Gilliam performed Deaton in a way that quickly endeared him to fans.

Towards the end of his time on Teen Wolf, Gilliam joined the cast of The Walking Dead, portraying Father Gabriel. Compared to Deaton, this character is similarly grounded in morals and beliefs, but he differs in that the horrors of the world in The Walking Dead led Father Gabriel down a much darker path than Deaton followed. Father Gabriel is Gilliam’s most recent role, one he has portrayed for the past seven years. Now, with the ever-nearing Teen Wolf movie, Gilliam is stepping back into his role as Dr. Alan Deaton, along with a host of other Teen Wolf alums.

Gilliam spoke about his process for getting back into character as Dr. Deaton during a panel at the Fandemic Tour in Atlanta (via ComicBook). Gilliam revealed that he started the process by going back and rewatching the entire Teen Wolf series so he could remember “who it was [he] created.” Gilliam hopes that by rewatching the series, he can effectively recreate Dr. Deaton.  Read more of what the actor said below:

I don’t carry Father Gabriel around with me, I kind of slip into that when I go to work. So, I don’t imagine it’s gonna be a big block for me to slide back to Deaton’s shoes or Deaton’s skin. I’m hoping that’s going to be the case.

Gilliam’s approach to the Teen Wolf movie seems to be the same as many fans are taking — rewatching the Teen Wolf series and refreshing the memory of the events that took place leading up to the film. In Gilliam’s case, of course, the stakes of him remembering are quite a bit higher than if he were a typical audience member. Luckily, Gilliam seems far from concerned about reprising his role as Dr. Deaton. The way Gilliam describes the characters he plays as something he slips into at work implies that the transition back to Deaton will not be difficult, but rather something he must grow used to again — the same way someone remembers how to ride a bike.

It has been a long time since Dr. Alan Deaton was last seen on screen, so it is possible that Gilliam adds some new facets to his character in the upcoming Teen Wolf movie. Still, his choice to revisit the original series for inspiration indicates a reprisal that will feel true to the original series and trigger feelings of nostalgia in audiences when they watch the film. Perhaps, viewers should take a page from Gilliam’s book and rewatch the series to prepare themselves.
