Tesla: 9 Things You Didn’t Know Your Touch Screen Could Do

Tesla has been changing the game since its creation in 2003. Owning a Tesla puts the driver at the forefront of innovation, specifically with the ability to control the entire car at the touch of a button on a touchscreen.

Version 10.0 was recently launched (in late 2019) to give the user an even more innovative experience when driving their Tesla. The car operating system has included an immense amount of features in the past, such as games to play while charging the car, spot-on navigation, and wifi that is as fast and connected as one in someone’s household. Although the touchscreen has existed in Teslas since the original model, the latest update gives the user the ability to personalize their drive and specific preferences that suit them while enhancing the security to a new level.

9 Access to Streaming Services

Across the new models, a Tesla owner can sign in to Netflix and start streaming their favorite shows and movies. Joined by YouTube and Tesla-owned videos, anyone in the car can watch the viewing of their choice; however, none of these video services can be used while the car is in drive.

Remember to practice safe driving techniques, although this streaming access may be tempting to use while on a long road trip.

8 Easter Eggs and Games

Elon Musk is known for including easter eggs in his car models, and the latest models have not stopped this tradition. Other models have featured Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road and Atari video games, which can be accessed through the touchscreen and steering wheel buttons. The newest model has added the classic CupHead game, but a USB controller is necessary to play.

7 Car-aoke

Car road trips have been changed forever thanks to Tesla’s car-aoke feature. The built-in touchscreen has the option to turn on lyrics for karaoke whenever you are in the car. A range of classic tracks is added to Tesla’s interface where anyone in the car can sing along to the highlighted lyrics.

Although the audio may not mimic the exact music track of the original songs, this feature is still one of the most entertaining for its passengers.

6 “I’m Feeling Lucky” Option

Tesla has created their own version of Google’s “I’m feeling lucky” option to their navigation on the touchscreen, which will find you somewhere nearby that is of possible interest to check out. Just by selecting the location, the driver is given a list of options to peruse for their next adventure. The touchscreen takes it one step further with an “I’m feeling hungry” option, giving directions to the nearest restaurant.

5 Google Maps Enhancement

As many car touchscreens are used for navigation, Tesla uses satellite imagery from Google Maps to not only navigate the route but to point out every Tesla Supercharger location in the vicinity. Tapping on a Supercharger marked location on the screen will inform the user of the number of chargers, how many are currently available, the cost, and instructions needed to gain access. This also includes a suggestion of how long one should charge their Tesla when heading towards a specific charging location.

4 Other Car Controls

A car is nothing without its basic controls, which can also be controlled from the touchscreen. The lower part of the screen is where one can find controls for heated seats, heated windshields, music volume, and shortcuts to other features in the Tesla.

This panel is permanently displayed and can be operated mostly without looking at the screen, making the feature safe for drivers to use on their daily travels.

3 Music Services

Each Tesla model comes with DAB radio and Spotify streaming access with the connection to 4G. This touchscreen feature is still under wraps, as an FM radio option and other music options, such as Apple Music, are still not included. Music services are able to be displayed at the same time as the navigation map and rear-view camera. The music feature can take up two-thirds of the screen, around half the screen, or shrink into a compact horizontal bar above the permanent controls, depending on one’s preference.

2 Climate Control

The temperature, direction, and speed of airflow can be adjusted on the touchscreen instead of the standard settings. Further, there is a Biohazard Defence Mode, which ups the airflow, pressurizes the cabin, and uses a HEPA filter to help clean the air before being fully breathed in by a passenger. This feature is not available in Model 3, but every newer model is equipped with this high-tech air control. In addition, the climate system can be left on when you leave the vehicle or automatically switched on when the cabin gets too warm.

1 PIN-to-drive

Keyless car entry has been in Tesla’s cars for years, but this favored feature can sometimes cause an easy break-in for possible intruders. The most updated version of Tesla’s touchscreen has added PIN-to-drive, where drivers must enter a PIN on the screen before the car can be driven or used. Additionally, the key fob’s passive entry can be disabled through the screen to help prevent thieves from potential hacking of the car or data. The Model 3 does not have a key option at all, giving the driver a card to open the vehicle, and is meant to be opened with a phone app or PIN.
