The DCEU’s Future Needs To Fix One Justice League Green Lantern Mistake

Zack Snyder’s Justice League introduced the DCEU’s first Green Lanterns, but future movies should make them more than just cannon fodder. The Justice League Snyder Cut incorporated iconic characters such as the Joker and Deathstroke, and also gave bigger roles to heroes like Cyborg and the Flash. Although the Green Lanterns didn’t play a big part in the movie, the Snyder Cut confirmed that they have been active since ancient times, with Yalan Gur present in the fight against Darkseid, who chopped off his hand and murdered him without much effort.

The Green Lanterns are known for their immense amount of power, as each member is powerful enough to protect their own sector of the universe. Only a handful of human beings have been worthy of wielding the emerald ring, and they have managed to beat villains as powerful as Sinestro, Parallax, and Atrocitus multiple times. As powerful as Darkseid is, Yalan Gur could have done more to fight him than being murdered like any regular Parademon. The “History Lesson” from the Snyder Cut had Darkseid kill the equivalent of a Justice League member in a matter of seconds.

Green Lantern is the only major Justice League founding member not to appear in a significant role in the Justice League Snyder Cut. Zack Snyder almost included John Stewart, but Warner Bros. didn’t give him permission to use him because they intend to introduce him in a future project. So, the two Green Lanterns in Zack Snyder’s Justice League are Yalan Gur and Kilowog, who get unceremoniously killed off at different points in the Justice League Snyder Cut timeline. Future DCEU movies should give back the Green Lanterns the reputation they have lacked, perhaps factoring their previous losses into the plot. Heroes like John Stewart and Hal Jordan (the Green Lantern portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, who Zack Snyder also wanted to introduce) could make Green Lanterns the respected protectors of the universe they’re known as in the comics.

The creativity of the Green Lanterns is as important as their strength, and the green color of their rings stands for willpower. These qualities make for outstanding stories, which is why the fact that the Green Lantern Corps hasn’t starred in more films and shows is so strange. There are many Lanterns in DC that could defeat famous villains in a matter of seconds, and it’s safe to say that having a Green Lantern in the Justice League would have helped them stand a better chance against Darkseid and the Apokoliptians. Their corner of the DC Universe is as vast in narrative possibilities as it is in sheer scale, and it’s filled with characters who have the potential to obliterate whole planets.

Darkseid has actually wiped the floor with the Green Lanterns in the past. For instance, the animated movies Justice League: War and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War showed how easy it is for Darkseid to humiliate Hal Jordan and obliterate the Green Lantern Corps, respectively. But introducing the Green Lanterns as pushovers in Zack Snyder’s Justice League does them a disservice. A cameo by Alan Scott in Black Adam or Hal Jordan in The Flash can go a long way toward making the Green Lanterns a force to be reckoned with.
