The Exorcist Director Calls A Quiet Place 2 A Classic Horror Movie

The reviews are in for A Quiet Place 2and they include a thumbs-up from the director of one of the greatest horror movies of all time: The Exorcist. Krasinski made his directorial debut in 2018 with A Quiet Place, a genre pivot many didn’t expect from the leading man of The Office, a workplace comedy, and Jack Ryan, a political action drama. The director’s fresh perspective ultimately proved an asset to the film as A Quiet Place achieved critical and box office success.

A Quiet Place, written by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck in collaboration with Krasinski, takes place in a nightmarish Earth plagued by a mysterious species that has overtaken humanity. The monsters are blind and use their acute hearing to hunt prey that includes Krasinski’s character, Lee Abbott, and his family. Lee’s daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) uses a cochlear implant for impaired hearing, and the family discovers that the device can be used against the aliens. A Quiet Place 2 picks up after the death of Krasinski’s character, who sacrifices himself to the monsters at the end of the first film in order to draw them away from his family. Armed with their new weapon, the Abbotts depart their destroyed farmhouse in search of human allies.

William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, has given the follow-up his stamp of approval on Twitter. The acclaimed filmmaker calls A Quiet Place 2 a “classic horror film” in a tweet, which is high praise coming from someone responsible for making a classic horror film himself. The director also argues that the film’s release means “cinema is back,” which could either be a reference to the COVID-19 pandemic or the medium as a whole. Here’s Friedkin’s tweet as well as Krasinski’s response.

The sequel to Krasinski’s sci-fi horror-thriller debuted in theaters yesterday for Memorial Day weekend, and it’s quickly racking up a profit at the box office. Based on returns of $19.3 million during its premiere and $4.8 million during Thursday previews, the film is now positioned to gross $47.5 million in its first three days. Movies obviously aren’t making as much as they would have before the pandemic, but A Quiet Place 2 is starting to show that, as Friedkin suggested, “Cinema is back.”

The definition of a “classic” horror movie has changed substantially since the 70s, as new filmmakers produce movies for the genre that either alter or reject its tropes with successful results. Krasinski’s A Quiet Place films explore the simple idea of silence to induce fear in his audiences, something that legendary horror author Stephen King has also praised Krasinski for. A Quiet Place 2‘s post-apocalyptic setting, alien threat, and minimal dialogue may differ from other films in the horror genre on a stylistic level, but the movie’s essential goal of scaring viewers is pure horror.
