The Last Kids On Earth: Ranking Each Character By Intelligence

Netflix’s The Last Kids on Earth is based on a series of novels written and illustrated by Max Brallier and Douglas Holgate, respectively. They were so popular upon release that the streaming giant decided to give it an animated adaptation, which has similarly performed decently well among viewers.

The narrative begins with the viewpoint of Jack Sullivan, a teenager thrown from foster home to foster home, and his experiences in the abrupt apocalypse. There are human and non-human allies and enemies, many of whom are morally undefined, which makes the story all that interesting. What about in terms of intelligence, though? Who’s the smartest character in the show?

10 Dirk Savage

Alright, so Dirk is not blessed in the brainpower department. At least he’s got the bully thing going for him. Well, not anymore. This post-apocalyptic jock spends his time helping the team out on their missions, especially (and to his chagrin) tasks that require brute strength.

In fact, Dirk has happily made peace with his IQ level, seeing as he wants to be recognized as a monster: he keeps calling himself Dirk-monster, which makes the humans giggle and the monsters guffaw.

9 Chef

Chef is the monster cook; to be fair, calling him as such is an insult to the culinary arts. What he considers gourmet might be so for him and his kind, but the kids find it to be utterly vile.

Chef doesn’t seem to understand this, however, but then again, he is so focused on his hostility towards Dirk that he makes some pretty silly decisions during battle. For instance, he refuses to believe that the boy would want to share the spoils of victory with him, regardless of whether he’s offered the first chance to attack or not.

8 Skaelka

Skaelka and smartness don’t go hand in hand, but who said there is just one type of intelligence? She comes off as this savage and uncivilized warrior who resorts to her axe to fix her problems, annoying June who mostly wants to find a peaceful resolution.

However, Skaelka is extremely adept in battle, proving that her skills lie in the sphere of combat. Most importantly, though, she is a kind and loyal friend and is always there to support the others whenever necessary.

7 Rover

Rover doesn’t speak or think or act like anyone else — he’s a monster dog, so there’s no reason why he should. Nevertheless, he has displayed excellent perception and a clever sense of judgment in the various scrapes the kids get themselves into.

All Jack needs to do is blow a whistle, and Rover comes bounding over like a sentient boulder and assists in escaping (or fighting or planning or a lot of other things, really.) Also, he’s super cute, so there’s that.

6 Jack Sullivan

Jack Sullivan is far from naive, but he’s certainly not as astute as some of the others in the story. He’s packed to the brim with innumerable self-doubts, mostly revolving around being alone when all his friends leave him (he thinks) to find their families.

These uncertainties have a negative effect on his strategic and tactical acumen; one of the most inane things he keeps doing is running off on solo missions simply because he hates the idea of his friends being exposed to all the hazards that teem the SoCal wasteland. Not very bright, Jack.

5 Thrull

The first proper villain in the series turns out to be Thrull, who works extra hard to deceive Jack into believing that he could be their side. This level of manipulation, although not impossible given how much the boy wants a father figure in his life, requires a specific arsenal of intellectual talents.

Sure, he may not know how math works (or he does, it’s not clear), but in terms of his plotting and scheming to bring his master, Rezzoch, into the world? He’s a virtuoso.

4 June Del Toro

The way Jack talks about June, in the beginning, makes her sound like a fairy tale “damsel in distress”, waiting to be rescued by her knight in shining armor. To the contrary, she’s quite the badass, having gotten through by herself for quite some time (and, as she fiercely tells Jack, is in no need of a savior.)

In addition to her survival savvy, June is the first to rationalize every move they make and does not like it when the boys toe the line or decide to act outside their calculated agenda. In all honesty, this sort of dispassionate coordination is essential in the post-apocalypse.

3 Rezzoch

It’s not known exactly who or what Rezzoch is, nor the nature of her existence, her powers, or her intentions. All that is evident is that she wants to destroy the Earth, as she has a myriad of other worlds in the ancient past.

Her everlasting malevolence aside, imagine the level of complexity that goes into her plans: the organization, the administration, countless minions under her command. All of this necessitates a seriously sharp mind, one that can probably play four-dimensional chess (if such a metaphor were real.)

2 Quint Baker

There’s no question that Quint is one of the most intelligent characters in the show, and certainly the brainiest human. His scientific genius is astounding, considering that he invents a whole host of complicated weapons, gadgets, devices of any sort, for example, the bottle rocket launcher, and the BOOMerang.

Quint is also capable of recovering seemingly broken electronic items, as he effortlessly restores a broken radio so that June can learn more about the rescue messages.

1 Bardle

Bardle, the monster wizard, is initially shaded as the villain until it becomes obvious that he’s the one actually trying to stop Thrull and Rezzoch. Not only is he competent enough to take on hardy combatants with his enchantments and telekinetic powers, but he’s also incredibly mature, making him the ideal person to receive advice from in a post-apocalyptic scenario.

Bardle’s magical aptitude is truly through the roof, as he’s the only character with enough power to transport the kids into an “astral plane” where they can fend off Rezzoch’s encroachment of Jack’s consciousness.
