The Legend Of Korra: The Characters Vs. The Cast

The Legend of Korra came on Nickelodeon between 2012 and 2014, as a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which came on the same channel a few years earlier, from 2005 to 2008. The story focused on a heroine named Korra, who was Aang’s reincarnation and the new Avatar.

Those who have watched this television show probably recognized some voices, as the characters are brought to life by well-known actors… including some who were part of the original Avatar series! And down below, 10 of the main characters are shown next to the celebrities who provided their voices in this thrilling and animated story.

10 Janet Varney As Korra

The star of the show is Korra, the new Avatar. While Aang was playful and spiritual, Korra was more of a strong and feisty fighter, with a rebellious side. Both of them did whatever it took, though, to spread harmony and protect those around them.

This character was voiced by Janet Varney, who has appeared on shows like How I Met Your Mother and Psych and who was the mom in the movie Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer in 2011.

9 David Faustino As Mako

Early on in the story, Korra met two brothers, and the older one was a firebender named Mako. He was very protective and ended up becoming a detective in Republic City. It should also be noted that this character was named after Mako Iwamatsu, who originally voiced Uncle Iroh.

Mako was brought to life by David Faustino, and this actor was on Little House on the Prairie, E/R, MADtv, Entourage, and Modern Family, to name a few. He is best known, though, for being Bud Bundy on Married… with Children.

8 J. Byrne As Bolin

The younger brother, an earthbender, was Bolin, and he provided a lot of comedic relief, much like Sokka in the original show.

He was voiced by P. J. Byrne, who has been seen on movies such as Dinner for Schmucks, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Bombshell, and on television series like NCIS, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Black-ish.

7 Seychelle Gabriel As Asami

Asami Sato wasn’t a bender, but she could definitely handle herself. Her father was also a well-off industrialist, so she was always inventing and fixing gadgets and gizmos.

This character was played by Seychelle Gabriel, and this actress has been spotted in other TV shows like Zoey 101 Weeds and Revenge. And in 2010, she was actually in the film adaptation of The Last Airbender; she portrayed Princess Yue!

6 J.K. Simmons As Tenzin

One of the coolest parts of this series was seeing old characters all grown up and seeing some of the main characters’ children, such as Tenzin, one of Aang’s sons. He was an airbending master who helped guide Korra, and he was voiced by J.K. Simmons.

Previously, Simmons was on series such as Law & Order and The Closer and has voiced characters in things like Gravity Falls and Zootopia. He was also J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man flicks between 2002 and 2007.

5 Maria Bamford As Pema

Tenzin’s wife was named Pema, and while she may not be considered a main character, she played a pretty big role; her life was put in danger more than once, and she was busy raising children, such as the courageous one listed below!

Maria Bamford, a comedian, actress and voice actress, gets the credit for this role. Her voice can also be heard on shows like CatDog and American Dad, and she has been on series like Louie and Arrested Development. She also stars in Lady Dynamite, which tells her life story.

4 Kiernan Shipka As Jinora

Tenzin and Pema’s oldest child was Jinora, a bright and calm airbender voiced by Kiernan Shipka. And Shipka’s most notable past roles include portraying Sally Draper on Mad Men and Sabrina Spellman on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

3 Mindy Sterling As Lin Beifong

Another character whose parent was from the original series was Lin Beifong, one of Toph’s daughters. She was tough, just like her mother, as well as the Republic City police chief.

Additionally, she was portrayed by Mindy Sterling, who has also been seen in Austin Powers films, as well as series like Sister, Sister, The King of Queens, Desperate Housewives and Grace and Frankie.

2 Dee Bradley Baker As Naga & Pabu

The story would not be complete without Naga, Korra’s polar bear dog, and Pabu, Bolin’s fire ferret. Both of these cute creatures were voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who has voiced tons and tons of characters over the years… including Appa and Momo in the original show!

1 Other Stars Joined In On The Fun, Too
