The Matrix 4 Theory: An Original Trilogy Character Is The New Oracle

With the most recent casting reveal for Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections, audiences are already theorizing that Priyanka Chopra Jonas will star as both Sati and the Oracle. How this is possible is unclear, but this theory makes sense in a movie that already promises to continue The Matrix series’ complex meta-narrative. Chopra Jonas has experience encapsulating multiple characters in a single film and is more than capable of playing both roles, if, indeed, they are more than one.

The Matrix series epitomized the science fiction and action genres in the early 2000s with its now classic premise of humans trapped in a virtual reality created by machines. Across the series, Keanu Reeves’ hero Neo, or “The One,” is awoken by a group of rebellious humans, realizes his godlike abilities to manipulate reality, and leads the revolution against the machine world. Key to the success of the heroes in The Matrix is the clairvoyant Oracle. With the series’ and Neo’s return, it seems the Oracle may be coming back, too.

While the Oracle is human in appearance, she is a computer program responsible for creating the Matrix, especially the aspects that secure the virtual reality’s believability to humans. An expert of human psychology, she aided the revolution against the machines, effectively manipulating Neo into ending the war. Though this appears contradictory to being a part of the Matrix program, the Oracle’s goals were independent, desiring peace and freedom for the humans. While conducting the revolution, the Oracle took care of a variety of children, including, most importantly, Sati, a program created within the Matrix without purpose. Sati has surprising powers within the Matrix — e.g., at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, she creates a sunset. The Oracle recognized Sati’s great potential early on, foreseeing the young program having a great impact on the future of humans and machines. What Sati’s impact will be could be revealed in The Matrix Resurrections.

Priyanka Chopra Is Playing Sati In The Matrix Resurrections

Sati’s appearance has been confirmed in The Matrix Resurrections, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Trailers for the film show Chopra Jonas in a fairly innocuous role, functioning on a surface level no more than another human in the virtual world. However, Resurrections’ trailers insinuate that Sati will play a part in reawakening Neo to potentially start another revolution against the machines. Chopra Jonas is a talented actress and seasoned in complex roles; her performance in the Indian romantic comedy What’s Your Raashee? had Chopra Jonas appear as twelve different versions of the same character.

Chopra Jonas is the second revitalized character from the original series to have been recast from the original actor. Previously, the rebel leader Morpheus was announced to be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II instead of Lawrence Fishburne. Why a younger version of Morpheus will be featured is unclear, though Chopra Jonas as Sati makes more sense; a grown-up version of the character will match the timespan between the series’ installments. With a full life of development, however, Sati will inevitably have changed, perhaps realizing more of her abilities.

How Sati Could Have Become The New Oracle

Sati is worthy to replace the Oracle in The Matrix Resurrections. Her abilities rival that of the Architect, the core program dictating the virtual reality, and the Oracle herself. The sunset she creates in Revolutions rids the virtual world of its permeating green tinge, recoloring it as a brighter place. Sati is one of the three beings who meet at the end of Revolutions to discuss the future of the new Matrix. Neo is not present here, which implies a qualification higher than power, as Sati must have a truly integral future regarding the Matrix, on par with the Architect and the Oracle.

The Oracle seems to have chosen Sati as a successor, as seen in Revolutions. When Sati was marked for deletion by the machines due to her purposeless origin, the Oracle helps to hide Sati within the Matrix. However, in exchange for Sati’s safety, a malevolent program nearly destroyed the Oracle. Fortunately, the Oracle resurrected herself in a new body, managing to continue her work as well as mentoring Sati. Both characters met their temporary demise at the hands of the malevolent program, Agent Smith, who assimilated both characters into his own being.

Both characters reappeared after Smith’s defeat, but his absorption of them may be key to how Sati and the Oracle could be one. The Oracle always acts strategically, no matter what she does, and her interactions with Sati could be part of this. Possibly, the Oracle have resurrected herself in the form of Sati for a new version of the Matrix, or else passed on her role to the otherwise purposeless Sati. Alternatively, Sati, an inherently neutral program, may have gained the ability to assimilate herself with the Oracle, gaining her powers and therefore taking over. What goals or real purpose Sati has for Resurrections’ return to the Matrix are unknown.

Why The Oracle Needs To Return & What This Means For Matrix 4

As the Architect explains in The Matrix Reloaded, the Oracle is an integral, recurring component to each version of the Matrix. She guides “The One” in a way that pacifies the humans into believing the Matrix. She independently unbalances this system, however, and bargains with the Architect for the humans’ freedom. The Architect promises complete trustworthiness to their agreement, implying that his programming avoids the betrayal common to human nature.

However, The Matrix Resurrections seems to take place in a version of the Matrix where Neo is once again unaware of his false reality or powers, recalling the original movie. This suggests that the humans are once again under the machines’ control, which would renege on the Architect’s promise. It is possible that the Architect broke his programming and betrayed the Oracle, or else something more powerful technology/simulation has taken over, changing the Matrix.

The Oracle was the only force capable of combatting the Architect and the malevolent programs in the previous three films, and thus she will be necessary for Neo’s and the new rebellion’s success in Resurrections. If the Oracle always exists in the Matrix and can take on new forms, then she will most assuredly be returning in this new film. With Sati’s great powers and close connection to the Oracle, and Chopra Jonas’ confirmation to appear as the character, it is likely that Chopra Jonas will appear as both Sati and the Oracle in The Matrix Resurrections.
