The MCU’s Guardians Of The Multiverse Team (As We Know It)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s What If…?

In Marvel’s What If…?, it’s been teased that the Watcher will be forming a new team of superheroes known as the Guardians of the Multiverse, and trailers have confirmed several of the alternate MCU heroes the cosmic observer will soon recruit in the coming episodes. Despite the Watcher’s rules about non-interference, it seems as though a great threat will rise that could tear the entire fabric of reality and destroy the multiverse itself. As such, it seems as though he’ll soon be motivated to break his own laws as the animated series on Disney+ nears its conclusion.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Marvel’s What If…? episode 7, the Watcher was caught by surprise when an evolved version of Ultron arrived with an army of drones, having traversed the multiverse using the Infinity Stones embedded in a new body resembling an armored version of Vision. It seems as though he’s come from an alternate MCU timeline where he not only succeeded in uploading his consciousness into Vision’s vibranium synthezoid body (rather than the Avengers taking it), but also managed to secure the other five Infinity Stones beyond the one already in his possession during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It seems as though the Watcher may soon be forced to act, recruiting many of the heroes who’ve been featured in their isolated timelines (or soon will be). While a handful of these new Guardians have been revealed in the trailers, there could be other heroes involved as well. Regardless, here’s every member of the Guardians of the Multiverse team (as we know it so far).

The Watcher

Hinted in the released trailers and teased in the episodes themselves, it seems as though the Uatu the Watcher (played by Jefferey Wright) is being set up to interfere for the good of the multiverse. Despite his mandates to only observe and bear witness to the proceedings of the various realities in the multiverse, it’s hard to observe realities if they’re somehow being corrupted and/or destroyed by a powerful new force like Ultron wielding Infinity Stones.

Likewise, if the original Marvel Comics are any indication, Uatu is the worst at his job as he’s always providing warnings and getting involved to aid the universe he’s grown so fond of, being a rogue anomaly among his people. As such, it’s not much of a stretch to presume that he’ll be the one assembling the teased Guardians of the Multiverse, needing heroes to come together across timelines to save the various realities and timelines that make up the multiverse itself.

Captain Carter

As the trailers have featured, Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) will be a dynamic addition to the Guardians of the Multiverse, having received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. As such, she was instrumental in defeating the Red Skull and Hydra during World War II in What If...?‘s premiere episode, showcasing her abilities and leadership that could very much benefit the new Guardians.

Furthermore, the Watcher should have an easy time recruiting her, seeing as how she ended up in the present after fighting Hydra’s giant squid champion (which could have been Shuma-Gorath). No doubt she’s itching for a fight as she’s most likely struggling to adapt to the present era just as Steve Rogers did in the primary MCU timeline. She’s also seen in the trailers speaking with Strange Supreme, the dark Doctor Strange who destroyed his own reality.

Evil Doctor Strange (aka Strange Supreme)

As depicted in What If…?‘s fourth episode, the evil Doctor Strange, known as the Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch), allowed his ego and grief to overwhelm him, resulting in his determination to break an absolute point in time to save the love of his life, Christine Palmer. However, by doing so he inadvertently broke his reality, preserving his sole existence within a small pocket while everything else faded away and was erased. While he had begged the Watcher to help him save his world, Uatu refused as he was unable to interfere, leaving Strange alone in the emptiness with his guilt and shame.

However, it seems as though the Watcher will apparently need his help to save the Multiverse at large, a request that Strange might bristle at considering the lack of aid given to his reality. Even so, he is seen with other heroes in the trailer, indicating that he does join the team in future episodes. Perhaps he’ll be seeking to redeem his past mistakes?

Party Thor

Featured in What If…?‘s seventh episode which explored a timeline where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was an only child, the God of Thunder grew up to also become the self-proclaimed Party Prince, throwing destructive and chaotic parties on Earth with all of his friends. However, while Party Thor seemingly matured somewhat by the episode’s end, it was here where the Watcher was just as confused as Thor himself when faced with the arrival of the Infinity Stone-powered Ultron. Seeing as how Ultron is already on Party Thor’s world and timeline, it seems likely that the Watcher will simply recruit and find allies from across the multiverse to come to the God of Thunder’s aid.

T’Challa Star-Lord

T’Challa’s Star-Lord (Chadwick Boseman) is featured amongst the Guardians of Multiverse in the trailers as well, being a version of the Black Panther who was abducted as a child by Yondu and the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill. Having come home to Wakanda at the end of his battle against the Collector, it’s likely that he’ll be more than willing to aid the Watcher and the new Guardians to keep both his Ravager and Wakandan families safe. Furthermore, shots from What If…?‘s mid-season trailer did see Ego finding his son Peter Quill and taking his celestial power for himself. As a result, it could be revealed that the cosmic foe will somehow be a part of Ultron’s multiversal conquest, hence the Wakandan Star-Lord’s involvement with the new team.

Killmonger

Despite having gained his heroic status under false pretenses and sinister deceptions, it seems as though Erik Killmonger’s Black Panther seen in What If…? episode 6 will be a part of the Guardians of the Multiverse as well. As revealed by the trailers, Killmonger is indeed featured alongside Carter, Strange, Thor, and more heroes. However, it will be interesting to see if he continues to play the hero now that he’s secured the power he killed and schemed to gain, resulting in the deaths of his timeline’s T’Challa, James Rhodes, and Tony Stark. Regardless, it does ensure that Strange Supreme won’t be the only member of the Guardians of the Multiverse with a dark and questionable past.

Black Widow

The trailers have also featured Black Widow (Lake Bell) on the team, albeit one that has yet to be seen in the episodes released thus far. As the trailers reveal, this version of Natasha is seen fighting several Ultron drones on her own, an indication that she may be from the same timeline as the evolved Ultron himself who most likely took over the world rather quickly once he got all the Infinity Stones. Seen using Captain America’s shield and Hawkeye’s bow, it’s possible she became the last Avenger standing which will likely be detailed in a future episode.

Gamora

Last but not least, the final Guardian confirmed by the trailers is Gamora. Based upon her armor, it does look as though she’s perhaps still serving Thanos in her upcoming episode. However, it’s also possible that she potentially inherited her father’s role as a conqueror rather than turning away from the throne as she does in the primary MCU. Either way, it looks as though she’ll quite be quite the formidable warrior on the Watcher’s team of multiversal heroes.

Other Heroes Who Could Join What If…?’s Multiverse Team

It’s certainly possible that other heroes could make their way onto the Guardians of the Multiverse as well who simply weren’t featured in the trailers. Zombie Hunter Spider-Man would certainly be a great and fun addition, as would the Incredible Hulk (both of whom may still be fighting zombies in their alternate timeline featured in What If…?‘s fifth episode). Likewise, Captain Marvel has been featured in two episodes thus far and would be a powerful asset to the team, as would Thanos himself who joined the Ravagers thanks to T’Challa Star-Lord’s great powers of persuasion. In any case, it’s certainly going to be a wild ride when all of these heroes from different timelines come together to save the MCU’s multiverse.
