The Most Hyped Villain for Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a Sequel Tease

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is teasing the arrival of Darkseid despite the fact that he’s supposed to be the main villain for Justice League 2. The DC film realm is going to have a big year with the Snyder Cut finally getting its release after the original version was reshot and re-edited by Joss Whedon in 2017. After years of campaigning for the director’s cut of the DCEU film, HBO Max will be the platform to bring it to life. One of the weakest elements in Joss Whedon’s iteration of Justice League was its portrayal of the various DC Comics villains.

For their big feature film debut, the Justice League was set to take on threats from Apokolips. The movie featured both Darkseid as well as Steppenwolf who is played by Ciarán Hinds. The Whedon cut had a very different take on Steppenwolf as his visual look and role wasn’t what Snyder had planned for the New God. The theatrical cut doesn’t even feature Darkseid as Ray Porter’s character is only vaguely referenced. As marketing keeps ramping up, there’s been more and more teases of Darkseid’s presence in the Snyder Cut. But what’s intriguing is that the lord of Apokolips isn’t the film’s main threat.

Similar to the 2017 cut, Zack Snyder’s Justice League actually has Steppenwolf as its main threat as DC’s iconic team comes together. What has so far been revealed is that Darkseid has a huge presence in the infamous history lesson flashback that has been teased in the footage so far. This is his pre-Omega Sanction name, Uxas, he became the Darkseid that he is most known for in the mythology. While Darkseid has a few other key elements in the Snyder Cut, the marketing is truly promoting a villain that wouldn’t take the center stage until Justice League 2. Darkseid’s overall role is to tease what the league has to deal with in a follow-up.

Even though a Justice League Snyder sequel isn’t guaranteed to happen, it makes sense for HBO Max to rely on Darkseid as a key marketing tool. One of the biggest criticisms from the Whedon cut is how it butchered Steppenwolf as the main villain while Darkseid was nowhere to be seen. For the Snyder Cut, Darkseid helps tell the difference between the two versions of Justice League. Not only does Steppenwolf get his accurate look, but he helps set up Darkseid as a looming threat. That can also be reflected upon with the recent merchandise reveal of Darkseid, featuring a better look at the iconic DC foe.

With the exception of Smallville (that didn’t really do him in the flesh, but rather as a spirit), this will be Darkseid’s first proper live-action treatment and that is a massive deal. Darkseid has, for several decades, been one of the Justice League’s biggest antagonists as well as one of DC’s most popular villains. Even if a Snyder Cut sequel never happens, it’s impossible to not hype up Darkseid being in the first film, even if it’s for a limited amount of time. With Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming up in March, more Darkseid teases are likely on their way.
