The Most Unnecessary Storylines From Dawson’s Creek

Iconic teen series Dawson’s Creek has many huge moments over the course of the six seasons it was on the air. From Joey (Katie Holmes) and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) falling in love and betraying Dawson (James Van Der Beek) to the gang moving to Boston and starting their adult lives, there are so many storylines that had a powerful impact.

That’s not the case with all of them, though. There are a lot of things that have happened to the main characters that fans didn’t love. Read on to find out the 10 most unnecessary storylines from Dawson’s Creek.

10 Joey Meets A Cute Boy And Lies About Her Identity

In the first season episode “Kiss,” Joey becomes interested in a cute boy who is visiting Capeside. She lies about her identity in order to get closer to him and pretends that she’s a wealthy girl named Deborah who goes to boarding school.

This is such a strange thing for Joey to do since she’s so calm, level-headed and intelligent. It’s also weird when he wants to kiss her and she freaks out. Wouldn’t she want to experience her first kiss? This is an unnecessary storyline for a few reasons, but especially because Joey doesn’t need a random love interest who pops up for one episode and then disappears.

9 Joey’s Dad Comes Back

When Joey’s dad comes back in the season 2 episode “A Perfect Wedding,” it’s super tough for her and her sister, Bessie (Nina Repeta) since he has been in jail. But this is a completely unnecessary storyline.

Fans never know much about Joey’s dad, so this small visit didn’t really lead to him being developed as a character. It didn’t seem like he needed to come back at all. It’s not like he was being let out of jail forever, since he went back.

8 Dawson’s Mom Has An Affair With Her Co-Anchor

Since Dawson’s parents Gail (Mary-Margaret Humes) and Mitch (John Wesley Shipp) get remarried at the end of season three, it seems like they should have stayed together the entire time. It’s unnecessary when Gail has an affair with her co-anchor, Bob, because up until then, Gail and Mitch were such a perfect couple who were totally crazy about each other.

This storyline is pretty sad, and doesn’t make Dawson’s mom and dad look like very good people. They both act badly and are rather mean to each other. It just doesn’t serve much purpose since it makes the entire family act immaturely.

7 Jen Gets Revenge On A Cheating Charlie

In season 5, Jen starts dating a guy named Charlie (Chad Michael Murray) and then learns that he already has a girlfriend. They get revenge on him when they find out, and this is a storyline that didn’t need to happen.

It just feels awkward and cheesy, and it would have been better if Jen had simply been single during this time in her life, or if she and Dawson had started their relationship up again much sooner than they did. Charlie isn’t a particularly interesting character, which made this an unsatisfying storyline.

6 Joey And Dawson Kiss In The Season 4 Finale

When Joey and Dawson kiss in the season four finale “Coda,” it’s obviously a cliffhanger that sets up the next season. But since season 5 is the first of two college seasons, it wasn’t necessary to act like these two characters still had romantic feelings for each other.

Many fans agree that Joey and Dawson tried and failed to have a real relationship because she was always meant to be with Pacey. Stirring all of that drama up again was clearly just a ploy for ratings, and it didn’t feel like a genuine storyline.

5 The Characters Wonder If They Should Cheat On The PSATs

In the season 3 episode “None of the Above,” Jen’s half-sister Eve (Britanny Daniel) gives Dawson a PSAT copy that she finds, which makes the characters wonder if they should cheat.

This is so unnecessary because while this is a hugely important test and a big part of any teenager’s life, it’s not that interesting to watch characters take a test, study for a test, or think about cheating.

4 Joey Paints A Mural Which Is Then Ruined

In the third season episode “Crime and Punishment,” Joey paints a mural in Capeside, which someone ruins. Even though it seems like this storyline was created so Joey and Pacey could bond even more since he wanted to help her, it was so random and didn’t seem like it needed to occur.

Joey’s love of art is mentioned sometimes on the show, but it’s not a big enough part of her character that it makes sense when someone talks about it. She should either pursue art all the time or not at all because it always falls flat.

3 Dawson’s Dad Dies In A Completely Silly Way

Every Dawson’s Creek fan remembers the season 5 episode “Capeside Revisited” because it’s when Mitch dies. But although this was a huge moment for Dawson and Gail, it was executed so badly that it didn’t need to happen.

Has a TV character ever died in such a silly way? Did Mitch really think that he could grab ice cream (not even the cone, but ice cream) while driving and not get into an accident that could have been fatal? It seems like he would never made such a stupid and reckless decision, especially not when he had a family.

2 Jack Joins A Frat

Dawson’s Creek has many awesome characters and one of them is Jack (Kerr Smith). He wears his heart on his sleeve, cares about his friends, and is a great part of the group of friends.

It’s not so awesome when he joins a frat during the gang’s college seasons, though, and it just seems like something that is so out of character. This is a storyline that shouldn’t have happened at all. There are so many other storylines that Jack could have had, like having a legitimate love interest.

1 Pacey Loses Dawson’s Money In The Stock Market

In the season 6 episode “Catch–22,” it becomes clear that Pacey made a huge error when he invested some of Dawson’s cash in the stock market, and this is something that he never should have done. It goes quite wrong, and now he has to let his oldest and best friend know that his cash is forever gone.

This was an unnecessary storyline because it made Pacey look even stupider and sillier in a season that already wasn’t very kind to him. Pacey is a wonderful person who is a lot smarter than he seems, and he needed storylines in the fifth and sixth seasons which gave him the credit that he deserved. This storyline was yet another reminder that he had made bad choices at his corporate job, and fans didn’t need that.
