The Powerpuff Girls Secretly Exist In The Marvel Universe

Warning! Spoiler for Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 below

Marvel Comics’ stories are chalked full of fun easter eggs and secret cameos that feature other popular characters from totally different universes. In the latest issue of Empyre: Fantastic Four, The Powerpuff Girls villain Mojo Jojo made a secret cameo that suggests that the show’s universe might also exist inside Marvel’s world.

The Powerpuff Girls first debuted on the Cartoon Network back in 1998 and followed three superpowered girls, Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, who often tussled with powerful criminals and monsters. The show ran for six seasons and has had spinoff television shows, comic books, movies, music, video games, and more. One of the Powerpuff Girls’ main adversaries was a superintelligent chimpanzee named Mojo Jojo (voiced by Roger L. Jackson) who sported a giant hat for his big brain. Mojo Jojo made a surprise appearance in this week’s Empyre tie-in for Marvel Comics.

In this week’s Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 by Dan Slott, R.B. Silva, Sean Izaakse, and Marte Gracia, the superteam finds themselves out of gas and stranded on a rocky planet. After sending out a distress call, the Fantastic Four end up making a deal with an alien for The Thing to participate in a gladiator arena fight on the planet Florkanna Six. However, when the adult members are led to the arena, Franklin and Valeria Richards are left behind to be in charge of the ship. Obviously, the kids don’t listen and end up getting into the casino (by lying about their ages). Before bankrupting the entire place (via cheating), the kids try their hand at intergalactic craps and poker, and when at one of the gambling tables they run into a familiar face.

If you take a closer look at the Richards’ poker game, you’ll see they’re playing against a talking chimp that looks practically identical to Mojo Jojo. He’s got a similar helmet, armor, cape, and more identical features as his Powerpuff Girls counterpart. While he’s never named in the book as it’s a small easter egg, it’s a well-done, subtle cameo.

Mojo Jojo ‘s cameo opens further questions about whether The Power Puff girls exist in the Marvel Comics Universe as well. We’ve scanned the entire issue and couldn’t find them in this particular comic. However, considering that Mojo Jojo made a secret cameo in the book, it leads us into believing that The Powerpuff Girls also exist in the universe. The supervillains appearance is a good sign that maybe more characters could show up in the future in background cameos – how fun would that be?
