The Steven Universe Future Finale: 5 Things We Loved (& 5 Disappointments)

Steven Universe Future had its finale on the 27th of March and was warmly received by fans and critics alike. It took Steven in a different direction, one of healing from the past traumas he endured for the entire series. It did not end with a bang, but with a warm goodbye hug to his fans. It was true to its themes, ending on a note of love, awareness, and self-care.

However, the finale did have its disappointments as well as its best parts. Here are five things we loved and five things that disappointed us about the Steven Universe Future finale.

10 Callbacks To Early Episodes – Loved

The best endings are the ones that reflect back. Steven Universe Future did a great job at making us feel like the series went full circle. We got Steven doing a morning workout, which was a callback to one of the early episodes, “Future Vision.”

Steven made his own cookie cat ice cream sandwiches, which is obviously a callback to the very first episode. The Crystal Gems even sang the cookie cat song!

9 Never Got Lion’s Backstory – Disappointed

Lion was one of the greatest mysteries of the series and it appears he will remain so. Even Pearl, who had been with Rose for the longest, did not know that Rose had a lion. Its own pocket dimension seemed to be a location for all of Rose’s secrets, such as Bismuth’s bubbled gem.

What we could infer is that lion somehow died and Rose brought him back to life with her tears. How did he die? We will never know.

8 The Final Message – Loved

Steven helped so many humans and gems throughout the series. He had heavy expectations on his shoulders and it all came crashing down once everyone began to move on. He wasn’t his mom, but then what did that mean? Who is Steven?

The final message is one of love and support. Steven was a giver and his friends and family needed to be there for him to help him through his PTSD and identity crisis. This is a message a ton of viewers can empathize with.

7 No New Fusions – Disappointed

Fans are always thirsty for new fusions. The finale for the original Steven Universe wowed everyone with a large assortment of new fusions. Unfortunately though, the Future arc did not have any at all.

Fans wanted to see a Peridot fusion, or even the Diamonds doing a fusion. A fusion involving Spinel would have also been amazing.

6 We Saw Another Side Of Steven – Loved

Of all the things we loved in Future, this is one of the aspects we loved most of all. Steven broke out of his mold of always helping others and being a peacekeeper. Everyone has a dark side, even him. The best part of it all was that we still empathized with him. His feelings, after everything he has been through, made perfect sense.

We even got to see Steven turn into a monster. He even shattered Jasper. All of this was mind-blowing and really had us at the edge of our seats.

5 We Wanted More Spinel – Disappointed

Spinel was the star of Steven Universe: The Movie. Fans adored her for her personality, traumatic backstory, and unique animation style. It is possible that the writers behind Steven Universe Future did not expect her to get as popular as she did. This would explain why there is not much of her in the Future arc.

However, fans were happy to see her with what was provided. We especially loved her stretchy hug around the Steven monster. That was both sweet and goofy.

4 The Diamonds’ Inverted Powers – Loved

The way the Diamonds are in the Future arc is fascinating and one that can be examined way more deeply. They were the three main antagonists of the original series, but now they are opposites of what they were.

Yellow, who hurt gems’ physical forms, is now a healer. Blue, who would make others always cry, now makes them smile. White is the most interesting. She used to control others like puppets, but now others can control her like a puppet! In a sense, they have all become different forms of therapy. This was very interesting to see.

3 Nephrite Should Have Had A Bigger Role – Disappointed

Nephrite is easily forgotten and her character was a majorly missed opportunity. She was one of the first characters Steven ever helped. She was a monster and he still loved her and would attempt to help and heal her. This is a lot like what happened in the finale when Steven turned into a monster.

She could have been the greatest callback of them all if Future decided to use her. Unfortunately, they didn’t.

2 We Got A Lot Of Closure – Loved

Another important thing when it comes to a finale is closure. We got plenty of closure in the final episode. As Steven said goodbye to everyone in Beach City, so did we, the viewers.

A lot of critics have called the final episode a “palette cleanser” and we agree. It would not have been as satisfying a conclusion without the “Future” episode. We get to say out goodbyes and Steven gets to go on a journey of self-discovery. What could be better?

1 What Was In Lion’s Treasure Chest? – Disappointed

It is pretty shocking that this mystery was never answered. Rose had a lot of interesting objects in Lion’s pocket dimension. She had her sword, a tape for Steven, Bismuth’s bubbled gem, and more.

Among all this though, was a chest. We never see Steven open it. However, it opened at some point! If you watch closely during the movie, you will see that it is open. This means Steven opened it during the two-year time skip between the original series and the film. However, we have no idea what was inside or how he even got the chest to open.
