The Terror Season 1 Episode 10: How The Monster Was Finally Defeated

The Terror season 1 episode 10 saw the final confrontation between the survivors and the Tuunbaq, but how did the monster finally die? The Terror is based on the novel of the same name by Dan Simmons, which is a fictional recounting of the lost expedition to the Arctic by the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror in 1845. While the first season adapts Simmons’ 2007 book, the show later became a horror anthology based around real-world events, with season 2 being set in a Japanese internment camp in the 1940s.

While there is talk of The Terror season 3 happening, it has yet to move forward. The first season starred Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies and Ciarán Hinds, with the first episode revealing how the crew became stranded and how they were soon stalked by a vicious creature dubbed by the Netsilik as a ” Tuunbaq.” This is a mythical beast who starts attacking the crew after they accidentally kill the shaman connected to it. The series follows the slow descent of the men as the isolation, lack of supplies and attacks by the monster take their toll.

The Terror season 1 received praise for its writing and performances, with the horror elements being only one part of what made it so compelling. By the time The Terror season 1 episode 10 “We Are Gone” arrived, things have gone straight to hell. In the run-up to The Terror’s season 1 finale, the human villain Hickey led a mutiny that saw a group of men split from the camp. By “We Are Gone” they had even resorted to cannibalism to survive after it was discovered the tins of food they had been eating from was slowly poisoning them. Hickey and his men kidnapped Harris’ Captain Francis Crozier and planned to kill the creature, but when the Tuunbaq shows up, it’s already badly weakened.

On The Terror, the creature is supposed to represent the being that keeps the balance of nature. When the men get stranded there and kill the shamen, they disrupt that equilibrium, which is why it targeted them. Throughout season 1, it suffered wounds from previous attacks on the ships, eaten the flesh of poisoned crew members and even swallowed a doomed sailor who had tied forks to himself so he’d damaged the creature as it ate him. During The Terror season 1’s final confrontation with the sickly Tuunbag, it’s revealed Hickey isn’t planning to kill it – the other survivors are an offering to it from him.

The monster makes short work of them, and Hickey severs his tongue – which is part of the Netsilik ritual to bind a person’s soul with the Tuunbag – but the monster rejects his tainted soul and bites his arm off. Hickey is soon torn in half, and Cozier wraps a chain around the monster’s neck and chokes it to death. The death of the Tuunbaq isn’t treated as a victory on The Terror season 1 episode 10, with Lady Silence and the Netsilik mourning its passing. The creature’s weakened form is almost symbolic of the effect the men have had on the landscape with their arrival, and there’s no lack of irony in the fact the beast chokes when it tries to eat Hickey’s poisoned soul.
