The Vampire Diaries: Alaric’s Best Romances, Ranked From Worst To Best

Alaric Saltzman joined the main cast of The Vampire Diaries during Season 1, appeared in The Originals, and is currently playing a leading role in Legacies. After Alaric’s death in Season 3, no one could have imagined that he would have such a big part in The Vampire Diaries universe.

Since he’s been a part of the franchise since 2009, Alaric has had plenty of love interests come and go in his life. He’s had a rough go in the romance department, and many of the women Alaric loved met a tragic fate. Some of the women he dated managed to make it out of the series unscathed, but, sadly, they weren’t the right match for the former history teacher.

7 Isobel Flemming

Alaric first came to town to hunt down the vampire who killed his wife. But much to his surprise, Isobel wasn’t actually dead and had asked Damon to turn her into a vampire. The biggest shocker was that Isobel is the biological mother of Elena Gilbert.

Isobel claimed to love Alaric as a human, but that’s up for debate given that she let him believe she was dead for years. As a vampire, Isobel was willing to kill her husband if necessary, and her loyalty was only to herself. In Season 2, she took off her daylight necklace and burned to death in the sun.

6 Caroline Forbes

Viewers couldn’t wait for Alaric and Caroline to call off their engagement. After a group of witches transferred Jo and Alaric’s babies into Caroline’s womb, Caroline came to love the children as her own. In order to give the girls a stable home, Caroline agreed to marry Alaric, despite having no romantic feelings for him.

Alaric was in love with Caroline, which was weird for about a hundred different reasons. There are wild age gaps between the couples in the series due to everyone’s immortality, but Alaric and Caroline’s situation felt different. He was her high school history teacher and was previously in a serious relationship with her best friend’s guardian, making the whole thing odd.

5 Meredith Fell

Meredith wasn’t a bad character, but there wasn’t anything unique about her, either. She and Alaric didn’t have much chemistry, but it was nice to see Alaric dating again after Jenna.

Although Meredith helped Alaric when he developed an alter-ego due to his Gilbert ring, their romance didn’t evolve much beyond a kiss or two. Meredith’s scenes with Damon were more enjoyable, and even her chemistry with Stefan was better, given that Paul Wesley was the actress’s husband at the time.

4 Sheriff Mac

Sherriff Mac’s time on the series was short-lived, but she made quite an impression on Alaric. Alaric hasn’t had a lot of luck in the love department, and it would have been nice for him to settle down and be happy for once.

Alaric and Mac had great chemistry, but their romance didn’t end up going anywhere in the long run. The supernatural chaos surrounding Mystic Falls caused Mac to leave town, but as long as she’s alive, it’s always possible for Legacies to bring her back.

3 Emma Tig

Emma and Alaric’s relationship was complicated, but they had a strong friendship throughout her time on Legacies. There always seemed to be something more between them, and when they share a drunken kiss, it looked like things were heading in a romantic direction.

However, Emma had feelings for Dorian, and she and Alaric didn’t work out, in the end. But they had a lot of potential, and if Emma didn’t leave the show there’s no telling what could have happened down the line.

2 Jenna Sommers

An argument could easily be made for Jenna for the number one spot, and her romance with Alaric was a main plot point during the first two seasons of the show. Jenna was one of the only characters who remained pure until the end, and she and Alaric made a fantastic couple.

They had plenty of obstacles to overcome, especially after Isobel came to town and stirred up trouble. Jenna was the only person who was kept in the dark about the supernatural, which made it difficult for Alaric to explain his odd behavior. However, their love always won out in the end. Jenna’s death came as a shock to fans, and it haunted Alaric for quite some time.

1 Jo Laughlin

Even though Alaric and Jo only knew each other for a season, The Vampire Diaries went out of its way to showcase Jo as the love of Alaric’s life. Their relationship moved extremely quickly, and by the end of the season, Jo was pregnant with his twins and they were standing at the altar.

While it was hard to buy into a love story as rushed as their’s, viewers willingly suspended their disbelief because of how perfect they were for each other. Jo and Alaric were a surprising highlight of Season 6, and Jo’s death is one of the most heartbreaking losses of the series.
