The Voice: Kelly Reveals Hilary Duff’s Husband Wrote Her Favorite Song

Kelly Clarkson has had many hit songs throughout her career, but The Voice coach has revealed her favorite song of hers is one written by none other than Hilary Duff’s husband, Matt Koma. Hilary married the songwriter in 2019, five years after splitting from ex-husband Mike Comrie, and the pair share two kids, Banks Violet Blair and Mae James Blair. Besides Kelly, Matt has written songs for artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Zedd, and Keith Urban. He also has his own original music and in 2015 released a song with The Knocks called “I Wish (My Taylor Swift)” about his desire to find a woman like pop superstar Taylor Swift. The singer-songwriter coincidentally met the Lizzie McGuire alum the same year, and she surely fits his description of wanting a powerful, “boss” woman.

Hilary and Matt met while working on the How I Met Your Father star’s fifth studio album, Breathe In, Breathe Out. Her husband helped co-write her song “Confetti,” which samples Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven” during the song’s bridge. The musician also has worked as a producer on many songs, including several tracks on Shania Twain’s fifth album, Now. Matt has also been open about his battle with an eating disorder and penned the song “Dear Ana” about it in 2017.

If you ask Kelly, she’ll tell you Matt’s best song is “Someone,” which just so happens to be her favorite song from her own discography. Kelly had Hilary as a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where the American Idol alum told her that her favorite song of hers is one that Matt wrote for her. The host, who admitted to not realizing Matt was Hilary’s husband, explained, “Someone” is “one of those songs that people ask me if you could’ve written any of your songs…..that’s one of them I wish I’d written.” The singer performed the song on her show during Kellyoke in January.

Kelly featured “Someone” on her 2015 album, Piece By Piece. While The Voice coach has written many of her own songs, her favorite is one that she does not have writing credits on. The song is a piano-heavy ballad in which Kelly sings a fake apology to an ex-lover while simultaneously wishing the person finds someone they believe is worth loving. The song is incredibly emotional, with Kelly’s powerhouse vocals adding to the devastation of the lyrics. The song compares the toxic relationship to driving in LA traffic and concludes with Kelly admitting she’s sorry that she’s not sorry.

Kelly certainly picked a beautiful song as her favorite, as heartbreaking as it may be. It’s clear that the message of the song means a lot to her, especially as she’s been dealing with her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. While some fans may argue one of her bigger hits like “Since You’ve Been Gone” or “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” is their favorite, the Matt Koma-written ballad has a lyrical strength that makes it understandable why The Voice coach loves it so much. The emotional tune is undoubtedly one of her top songs, and fans definitely wouldn’t mind if Kelly and Mat teamed up again sometime in the future.
