The Winchesters Clip Teases Mary And John’s Early Dynamic

A clip from the upcoming Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters shows a young John and Mary’s early relationship dynamic. The Winchesters is a prequel to the long-running CW series Supernatural, which was created by The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. The new series is set to premiere on the CW on October 11, 2022, and will be executive produced by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles.

Whereas Supernatural followed brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters tells the story of their parents, John and Mary Winchester. Though fans have gotten glimpses at John and Mary’s early relationship through flashbacks and time-travelling episodes of Supernatural, the prequel series will show how the two met, fell in love, and fought monsters together all the while. Ackles is set to reprise his role as Dean in the series, narrating The Winchesters through reading entries in his father’s journal. John and Mary’s relationship went through some serious ups and downs in Supernatural, and it looks like their relationship in The Winchesters is no different.

In a clip posted by the official The Winchesters Twitter page, John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly) get off to a somewhat reluctant start to their relationship. While fighting a monster, John accidentally elbows Mary in the face, prompting Mary to ask John to “stop helping.” In another scene, John tells Mary that she clearly likes her coffee the same way she likes her worldview – “black as night.” Check out the clip below:

While fans have gotten to see versions of young Mary and John in Supernatural, The Winchesters shows a very different side to the fledgling couple. Whereas John didn’t discover the world of the supernatural until Mary’s death in the first episode of Supernatural, The Winchesters sees John fighting monsters alongside Mary, who comes from a long line of hunters. Mary’s appearance also seems dramatically different, as young Mary in Supernatural had a sweet, 70s, all-American girl style, while Donnelly’s version of the character sports a much more badass, punk look.

As fans discovered in Supernatural, Mary and John’s relationship was far from perfect, but it was certainly loving – and The Winchesters looks to be continuing this trend with some sharp, playful banter between the two in this newest clip. Though some longtime Supernatural fans have protested that the prequel series is changing too much of Supernatural’s lore and continuity, others are simply eager to see the Winchester family back on-screen for the first time since 2019. If this clip is any indication, The Winchesters is going to be just as romantic and spooky as fans would expect from a Supernatural series.
