The Witcher Season 2 Star Teases How Yennefer Will Be Different

The Witcher star Anya Chalotra teases how Yennefer will be different in season 2. When The Witcher premiered in 2019, it was praised by fans for its action, world-building, and the casting of beloved characters from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books upon which the series is based. The popularity of the series led to Netflix announcing a second season for the show, which is currently set to premiere later in December.

While Henry Cavill’s take on Geralt is frequently commended for the way he captures the stoic nature of the character along with the intense physicality, Chalotra’s performance as Yennefer has also drawn praise from fans for her mysterious and yet commanding screen presence. Yennefer’s fate is left up in the air at the end of season 1, with her disappearing during the Battle of Sodden Hill, but it has already been confirmed that she will return in season 2. Trailers for season 2 hint that Yennefer will end up being discovered by Nilfgaardian forces in a forest following the events of the season 1 finale, but it’s still a mystery as to how she actually survived.

In a new interview with Digital Spy, Chalotra teases how Yennefer will be different from season 1, but reassures fans that the core essence of the character will remain unchanged. Chalotra hints that elements of the new season will change Yennefer’s perspective on certain things and that, ultimately, fans will get to more deeply explore her as a character. Check out Chalotra’s full comment below:

“She’s the same Yennefer. She doesn’t take no for an answer. Where there’s a will there’s a way, that will never change. But there are a lot of things this season – or, people this season – that really change her perspective on things. So, you get deeper into Yennefer.”

Chalotra doesn’t reveal any details about what events or characters will change Yennefer’s perspective, but there are a number of new characters joining The Witcher season 2, including Nivellen (Kristofer Hivju), Coen (Yasen Atour), Vereena (Agnes Bjorn), Lambert (Paul Bullion), Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz), Lydia (Aisha Fabienne Ross), Francesca (Mecia Simson), and Vesemir (Kim Bodnia). While details are still relatively scarce regarding what is in store for fan-favorite characters like Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer, these new characters will certainly not all prove to be friendly, with some possibly challenging Yennefer’s existing perspectives on the world. Fortunately, it sounds like fans will still get many of the same qualities that made Yennefer so likable in the first season, such as her determination and strong will.

It’s also not yet clear how Yennefer survived the unleashing of her inner chaos during the Battle of Sodden Hill and it certainly seems likely that such an event would have repercussions on her outlook on life going forward. Yennefer was a standout character from season 1, but the show really has an opportunity to dig deeper into the lore from the books while also treading new ground with season 2, showing audiences aspects of the character they haven’t seen before. Season 2 can also more fully explore the romantic elements between Geralt and Yennefer, which may very well bring out new qualities in both characters. Audiences don’t have long to wait now to see how Yennefer continues to evolve with The Witcher season 2 releasing on December 17th on Netflix.
