The Witcher: Why The Elves Struggle To Have Babies

The Witcher season 2 introduced more elves and went deeper into their story and lifestyle, revealing that they struggle to have babies – but why? Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is a series of novels and short stories that became widely popular when they were adapted to video games, which also helped it expand its already rich universe. The Witcher has also been adapted into a movie and a TV series in Poland in 2001 and 2002, and it finally got its first English language adaptation in 2019 thanks to Netflix, quickly becoming one of the platform’s most popular titles.

Season 1 of Netflix’s The Witcher approached Sapkwoski’s stories differently, following three characters whose stories are set in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan), and they continued to lead the series in its second season, now in a linear and much easier to follow timeline. The Witcher season 2 also introduced new characters, among those Francesca Findabair (Mecia Simson), an elven sorceress who served as ruler of the elves and as such looked to keep her people safe.

It was through Francesca that The Witcher season 2 revealed that elves struggle to have babies and her pregnancy was a central aspect of her arc in this season. Francesca, Yennefer, and Fringilla (Mimî M. Khayisa) were approached by the Deathless Mother, who showed herself in different shapes to each woman, disguising herself as Ithlinne (a legendary elven healer and oracle) in front of Francesca. The Deathless Mother offered Francesca a chance to rebuild the elven community through the successful birth of a pure elf, but she had to forge an alliance with Fringilla and Nilfgaard. Francesca eventually gave birth to a baby girl, but she back down from her deal with Fringilla, and so her baby was murdered. The birth of Francesca’s child was a big event for elves as the successful birth of a pure elf hadn’t happened in years, but why is it so difficult for them?

Elves live much longer than humans and they believe they were created, unlike humans who evolved, so they see humans as inferior to them. The physiology of elves, then, is very different from those of humans, and even though they live long lives, they are only fertile while they’re young. This is seen as one of the biggest weaknesses of elves, as they can be easily dominated by other races because they don’t have enough population to compete. In addition to only being able to conceive during their younger years, it’s difficult for them to be successful in bearing a child due to their biology, which is why the successful birth of Francesca’s child was such an important event for the elves and one they had to celebrate. The arrival of this pure elf baby brought a lot of hope for the community as it showed they can repopulate, but that didn’t last long. Francesca’s baby was murdered in order to prompt the elves to fight, and Francesca took revenge by killing all the babies in Redania that were in her path.

With elves now having an active role in The Witcher after Francesca learned from Istredd at the end of season 2 that Ciri is alive and has elder blood, hopefully season 3 will explore their story and lifestyle a bit deeper, even solving questions that the books haven’t. It’s unknown if Netflix’s The Witcher could see the elves welcoming a pure elf baby into their community after everything they’ve been through, but as the show has made many changes to the books already, it wouldn’t be surprising if it also changes the history of elves.
