Thor: Love And Thunder Poses A Guardians Vol.3 Plot Hole

Star-Lord’s apparent struggles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 create a plot hole in Thor: Love and Thunder. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is greatly anticipated by Marvel fans as both the debut of Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock and the first full adventure of the Guardians after Avengers: Endgame. Some lead-ins in the form of their appearances in Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are filling audiences in on what they’ve been doing in the time between movies, but there is one noticeable continuity hiccup in the former.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer, which was shown at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con, is described as establishing Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) as being greatly distressed and facing mental health struggles owing to the living Gamora (Zoe Saldana) having no memory of him. While this follows on from the time-travel elements Avengers: Endgame with the Gamora seen in the film being from a time before the Guardians of the Galaxy ever met, this is at odds with Quill’s appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. Though he and the Guardians only appear briefly in the movie’s prologue (with Thor not becoming a Guardians member), Quill seems as cheerful as ever with no evidence of depression.

Considering Quill and Gamora’s romance, such a barrier standing between them would be expected to greatly upset him. After all, learning that Thanos (Josh Brolin) had killed the Gamora that he knew and loved in Avengers: Infinity War led to Quill’s controversial assault on Thanos which then allowed the Titan to be able to execute the snap. For such a glaring gap in Quill’s mindset from Thor: Love and Thunder to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the latter will need to fill that plot hole.

How Guardians 3 Can Fix The Thor: Love and Thunder Plot Hole

One way to work around the lapse in Quill’s demeanor from Thor: Love and Thunder to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could itself tie into his and Gamora’s lost romance having a triggering effect on him. The return of the alternate Gamora, as leader of the Ravagers, coupled with the space-time challenges of their re-established relationship could be the kind of event to trigger severe depression in him. Quill might well have been healing from the loss of Gamora on his interstellar adventures with Thor and the other Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder’s opening, so seeing her again in such a specific context would no doubt be jarring for him.

In meeting Gamora again, Quill would likely find himself flooded with memories of their previous adventures together and the heartbreak he experienced upon learning of her death. At the same time, Gamora not knowing of any of those events herself due to the place in the timeline she originates from could compound Quill’s anguish. These could be used to explain the gap in the mood he exhibits from Love and Thunder to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Gamora, absent from Thor: Love and Thunder, unexpectedly returning and triggering a change in mental health for Quill. The challenge Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can pose for Quill could also form a bridge to his apparent contentedness in Thor: Love and Thunder. The return of Gamora would be something Star-Lord would be thrilled by, but the very unusual circumstances of it could also cause him some distress with the new challenges it presents.
