Thor’s Stormbreaker (Technically) Has The Power To Destroy Worlds

Avengers: Infinity War introduced Thor’s new weapon, Stormbreaker, and it’s more powerful than anyone would have believed; incredibly, Stormbreaker has the potential to destroy entire worlds. One of the most powerful weapons ever created by the Dwarven King Eitri, this enchanted ax can manipulate raw energy from the universe itself. It appears to be bonded to Thor, and just grasping it allowed the God of Thunder to heal at an accelerated rate.

It’s generally assumed that the most powerful demonstration of Stormbreaker’s power was the moment when Thor threw it at Thanos. Stormbreaker proved capable of resisting all six Infinity Stones; in the final battle of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos projected a beam attack against Thor, one that flared with the colors of all six Stones, but Stormbreaker didn’t even seem to be slowed by the blast.

But here’s the interesting thing; when Eitri was explaining just how powerful Stormbreaker could be, he didn’t talk about its propensity to resist Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet. Instead, he simply pointed out that it could potentially be used to summon the Bifrost. Otherwise known as an Einstein-Rosen bridge, the Bifrost is a wormhole that can transport a person from one place to another. On Asgard, it took a massive installation to create the Bifrost, but Thor can do it just by holding Stormbreaker. It’s an impressive feat, but in truth fans have underestimated its importance.

The first Thor film suggested that the Bifrost damages the local fabric of space-time, to such an extent that Jane Foster was able to detect signs of an Einstein-Rosen bridge and head out to investigate it. Thor‘s ending revealed that the Bifrost is actually dangerous; Loki intended to leave the Bifrost open upon Jotunheim, allowing the damage to space-time to increase exponentially until the entire planet was torn apart. Although Thor and the Asgardians use the Bifrost for transportation, it has the potential to be as destructive as any Death Star in Star Wars. – and that notion directly applies to Thor’s Stormbreaker ax, as it, too, has the power to summon the Bifrost.

Stormbreaker truly is the most powerful weapon the MCU has ever seen. Not only can it resist the power of all six Infinity Stones, but it also has the potential to tear open entire planets. All Thor would need to do to use that phenomenal power is choose a world, open the Bifrost, and leave it open. No doubt he would find it tiring to do so – but his target would be torn apart. Thanos really was fortunate to survive Thor’s wrath in Avengers: Infinity War, and no doubt there’ll be a rematch in Avengers: Endgame.
