Twilight: 10 Things About Bella Swan That Make No Sense

The fantasy vampire series Twilight has become a pop-cultural phenomenon known and loved by a lot of fans. Stephenie Meyer published the first book in 2005, and, in the next three years, followed it with three other installments. Another wave of Twilight mania broke out when Catherine Hardwicke directed a film adaptation of the first book, which premiered in 2008.

Kristen Stewart played the main heroine, Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson played her love interest, the mysterious and handsome vampire Edward Cullen. While there’s no doubt that the story has its charm, there are some things about Bella which don’t really make much sense.

10 Falling In Love With Edward

Of course, if Bella didn’t fall in love with Edward, the whole Twilight saga would have never happened. At least not in the way people know it. That doesn’t change the fact that Bella simply had no reason to fall in love with Edward. Edward is quite rude to Bella when they first meet, and, even after they become somewhat friendly, he keeps telling her that he’s bad for her and that they shouldn’t be together.

Almost every other person would say “okay, then, if you say so. Bye!” and leave. Why waste your time on someone who doesn’t seem to want to be with you? But Bella does exactly that… waste her time.

9 Staying With Edward

Let’s say that Bella is just an exceptionally patient and kind person who’s able to tolerate the strange behavior of other people and even fall in love with them despite said strange behavior. That said, once she found out that Edward is actually a vampire, just like the rest of his family, the best course of action for Bella would be to run and stay as far away from Edward and the Cullens as humanly possible (the pun intended).

Bella is a human, Edward is a vampire, and the two groups never mix well—especially after Edward confesses to her that he has to fight the urge to drink Bella’s blood since she smells so sweet to him.

8 Stringing Jacob Along

Stephenie Meyer presents Bella most of the time as a nice and decent person, but Bella can actually be quite cruel. Whether it’s intentional or not is up for debate.

One example of her less-than-stellar behavior in the series is the way she treats Jacob. Unless Bella is completely blind or oblivious, she has to know that Jacob likes her. Yet, she keeps stringing him along, making him believe that he might have a shot with her even though he never truly did. Whether you like Jacob or not, you got to agree that the guy deserves better.

7 Pining After Edward When He Leaves

When Edward leaves Bella in the second book, New Moon, Bella mentally breaks down and becomes dangerously unstable, so much so that when she starts having hallucinations featuring Edward when she’s facing dangerous situations, and she keeps on inviting danger into her life just to get a glimpse of Edward’s face.

There’s no other way how to describe this type of behavior other than stupid, irresponsible, and reckless. Sure, Bella is only seventeen years old, but, even at seventeen, you should know better. Bella doesn’t even take the time to properly consider how bad her parents would hurt if something really harmful happened to her.

6 Her Lack Of Hobbies

Let’s move away from Edward and Jacob for a moment. It might not be obvious at the first look, but, if you think about it really hard, Bella’s life is actually very bland. If she didn’t have Edward to think about and date (or not date), she wouldn’t be doing anything else besides going to school and sometimes hanging out with her friends.

Throughout the books, the readers rarely ever see Bella do anything that they could describe as a hobby. She reads a book from time to time (although it’s often for school), cooks for her dad, and surfs the internet. What else is she doing with her time every day? It really doesn’t make sense.

5 Relationship With Her Parents

It soon becomes clear in the first book that Bella doesn’t want to move to Forks but does it anyway to help her mom. The city itself aside, the main reason for Bella’s reluctance is that she has an awkward relationship with her dad Charlie since they don’t see each other very often and are not used to living together anymore.

Stephenie Meyer suggests that Bella is much closer to her mom and often took care of her while the two women still lived in one house. But, one has to ask, if Bella is so close to her mom, why does she barely talk to her? The number of conversations they share in the books is very limited.

4 She Becomes A Mom

While most people are no doubt happy for Bella that she had a child with the man she loves, it still doesn’t make much sense. Throughout the books, Stephenie Meyer repeatedly mentions that Rosalie, Edward’s sister, would love to have children but can’t since it’s impossible for vampires to sire children in a natural way.

So, why is it that Bella gets pregnant with Edward the vampire? Unless the ability to procreate is non-existent only in female vampires, Bella shouldn’t be able to have Edward’s child. And, even if there was no problem, it would probably take her longer to get pregnant considering the biological differences between them, as well as other factors.

3 Obsession With Her Age

Bella starts out in the series as a seventeen-year-old girl and stays pretty much the same age during the entire Twilight saga. When she finally becomes a vampire, she’s barely any older than her husband Edward, who became a vampire when he was seventeen. Yet, Bella insists that she really isn’t that much older than Edward. And, even before her transition to a vampire, she’s obsessed with her own age and has nightmares about growing old while Edward remains forever young. Bella seriously lacks perspective in this area and doesn’t seem to know that a few years really don’t play a significant part in the long run.

2 Her Success With Boys

While Bella has her strong sides and is far from ugly, it still doesn’t explain why are so many people attracted to her or want to be her friends. When Bella arrives at her new school, she presents a break from the ordinary lives of the Forks teenagers, but the mania which erupts over her is still suspicious and doesn’t have a strong base in reality.

The truth is that, unless someone is super exceptional, most people just don’t care about them, even if they’re new at their place of living or at their school. And Bella doesn’t belong among these super exceptional and attention-drawing people.

1 Dumping Her Friends

Speaking about Bella’s friends, it’s also pretty much impossible to overlook the fact that she eventually estranges herself from them as she grows closer to Edward and his family. While it sometimes happens that people drift apart, Bella dumps her friends, even while they’re still going to the same school. This is especially obvious in New Moon when Bella could have used the support of her friends to get over Edward, but, instead, she prefers to stay at home and be sad, depressed, and lonely, even though the company of other people would probably do wonders for the state of her mind.
