Two And A Half Men: 10 Hidden Details About Charlie’s House

Charlie’s Malibu house in Two and a Half Men was a bachelor’s dream home. It was located in sunny Malibu, California right on the beach. Because of its location, neighbors were scarce, giving it a remote feel in an otherwise busy location. Charlie bought the house to make it his own personal bachelor pad and for awhile it was a dream come true.

At least, until his brother Alan and nephew Jake were left homeless after Alan was kicked out of his home by his now ex-wife. Charlie’s life was turned upside down by this set of circumstances causing his once secluded house to be full of unwanted house guests.

10 Moving Walls

Charlie’s Malibu home was actually a Hollywood set designed to look like a real Malibu home. This shouldn’t come as much of a shock to fans since this is standard procedure for TV series. Each part of the set was placed next to the other, meaning that every inside and outside scene was done beside each other. In the episode “My Doctor Has A Cow Puppet” Charlie is scared by Rose in the bedroom causing his head to hit the wall. As he does, the wall begins to slightly shake, showing just how flimsy the set walls actually were.

9 Celebrity Neighbor

Charlie wasn’t accustomed to neighbors living in his otherwise secluded peace of heaven on the Malibu beach but that all changed when Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith buys the house next door. Charlie’s problems with his brother Alan are exacerbated after unfortunate events leave Charlie heartbroken and angry. An already frustrated Charlie begins to not be able to take Tyler’s incessant singing and harmonica playing causing him to gripe a little too much, eventually leading to an altercation that earns him a trip to the hospital. However, the two finally make up when Tyler is called on tour.

8 Flyover Shot

Throughout the series the residents’ in Charlie’s house make remarks about the beauty of the area. Its seclusion and closeness to the water just being a few of the positive factors that attracted many people to the residence.

Right after the intro in many episodes, fans got to see a real flyover shot of houses on the water in the real Malibu. Sadly, for fans looking to see which one is Charlie’s house, they will be sorely disappointed as the actual house is just a set found in a Hollywood studio.

7 CSI Crossover

Both Two and a Half Men and CSI ran simultaneous on CBS in 2008 and in the most unlikely of scenarios the creators of the two shows swapped for an episode, resulting in an unforgettable two-episode crossover special. After the death of Teddy Leopold, CSI investigates Charlie’s home for evidence of who might have committed the murder, only to discover that no murder had occurred at all, since the victim died from a heartattack. CSI actor George Eads makes an appearance as a guest at the wedding in the episode.

6 Shutting The Door Twice

When it comes to editing takes in movies or TV, nothing is going to be perfect no matter how much time is taken in the editing process. So, it isn’t much of a surprise to know that Two and a Half Men editors made a critical mistake that few fans picked up on in season 2. After Charlie and Jake walk in on Judith and Alan kissing, Charlie makes a quick comment before exiting again. In the very next scene, Charlie is again seen exiting the door from a completely different angle.

5 Cafe Bustelo Can

When it came to kitchen scenes, it wasn’t out of the ordinary to see alcohol bottles or other household items in the background. Though, in many cases the labels were faced the other way so fans couldn’t read it, since the show’s creators didn’t want product placements in the show.

However, throughout much of season 5, a Cafe Bustelo can, can be seen directly behind the actors and actresses. Because of its bright yellow color, it stands out more than the characters in the scene. Making it one of the few product placements ever seen on the show.

4 Where Did The Umbrella Stand Go?

Even on shows as well made as Two and a Half Men, set mistakes can be expected to be made. However, in the case of the umbrella stand by the door, the show’s creators could never find the right spot to place it. Sometimes it was to the right of the door, while other times it was to the left. There were even some episodes where the umbrella stand wasn’t even seen at all. Though, it is highly likely that the show’s creators didn’t think nor care if fans noticed the differences.

3 Sheen Couldn’t Play The Piano

One of the ironies of the show is that even though Charlie Sheen’s character, Charlie Harper made his money by creating catchy piano tunes for commercials and shows, the real-life Charlie couldn’t play a single tune. While it didn’t take a Hollywood miracle to create the tunes, it did take some Hollywood ingenuity. So, every time fans see Charlie sitting at his piano in his house doing his best impression of Mozart, the songs being heard were composed by Dennis C. Brown beforehand. Charlie Sheen pretended to play the piano, with the editors adding the jingles afterwards.

2 Couch Scenes

During season 8, Charlie Sheen had seen better days. His wife had left him and his mental stability seemed to also be on the decline. During the takes on the show, the creators would create choreography involving Sheen walking down the stairs or moving around his apartment.

However, towards the end of his tenure, Sheen began to ask for more of his scenes to involve him sitting on a couch, rather than actively moving around. Whether this was because of physical or emotional impairments plaguing him, he has never stated.

1 Three Mortgages

After Charlie Harper’s untimely death in Paris, Alan considers taking over payments for the house, only to have it revealed to him that it has three mortgages. Unable to afford the payments, Alan and Evelyn put the house up for sale with famous actors and actresses such as John Stamos, Jenna Elfman, and Thomas Gibson looking to see if they are interested in buying. Sadly, all eventually refuse for various different reasons. However, through unlikely circumstances, Alan meets a suicidal Walden Schmidt, who decides to buy the house and allow Alan to stay as a roommate.
